Factory head pipes on the SD were 1/4" larger in diam than those used on Dport Birds. I can get into original dated partsbooks, but was this muffler clamp for the front of the muffler to the head pipe on a '74SD?

Looks like a 1973-74 X-body with the 350 engine used the same clamp. Nova, Apollo, Omega, Ventura, Phoenix and Arcadian. I think it says with single exhaust system.

1244071 3.708 All F/S.D CLAMP, muffler hanger (Iwr. half) 1 1973 1974 3-63
1244071 3.708 All X/350 CLAMP, muffler hanger (Iwr. half) (w/single . 1 1973 1974 3-63

Might give some alternatives, anyway.

Chad

If you can't find an original, Gardner has correct reproductions of the muffler hangers and they say that they loaned out their factory original hangers to help in the making of the reproductions. From what Gardner says, I believe the same reproduction is also sold by some other vendors in case Garner won't sell them without the purchase of a full system. Here is the Gardner link:

thx to all the replys,i appreciate the part lookup. I will start looking at 73-74 nova parts cars..also gardner does not specify on their site that they have the sd only muffler clamp probably because they buy this reproduction on the open market, I looked up the repos and they are for regular exhaust system only...I need an original as my car is original with only 12,000 miles and am missing the clamp on one side

In the '77 Chevy MPC, I found a Chart showing the '74 Nova exhaust parts.

They don't show the clamp separate from the U-bolt so the 1244071 is not listed.

Instead they show the Clamp & U-bolt Unit for the exhaust pipe to muffler as p/n 1240744. For '74, it shows this p/n for the 6 cyl and the 350 2 bbl & 4 bbl..

I'm skeptical that it would include the larger clamp since the '73 Nova Chart shows the 1240744 for the 6 cyl, 307, and 350 2 bbl but for the 350 4 bbl it lists 3857547 and the bigger engine would more likely have a larger exhaust pipe I would think.

The 1240744 is very common for other '73 & '74 Chevy applications as indicated by the other Charts. But in some cases they list the 1240744 and below that, a 2nd line shows 1240745 with no explanation for which was used in what circumstance.

I mention all these p/ns cause you might score an NOS Clamp and U-bolt unit on ebay with the correct sized Clamp that you want included in one of these "Unit" p/ns.

This one was already sold, but gives you an idea of the possibilities.

Looks like the 1240745 Unit includes the 2-1/4" clamp.

Not exactly pristine And the price isn't pretty either.

But the info may be useful.

thank you for the info...the 1244071 is an L shaped bracket that does not use a Ubolt,it uses a band as the other side of the clamp....it was used to support the muffler...thx

Ah, my bad! Should have noted the description provided earlier as a Muffler Hanger Clamp.

So is p/n 1244071 for the Bracket and Clamp Band or just the Clamp Band?

May have answered my own question.

In the '83 Buick MPC, '73-'74 Buick X Body with 350 engine lists 1244071 as the Muffler Hanger Upper Half and 1244070 as the Muffler Hanger Lower Half.

Same p/ns in the Olds MPC for a '74 X Body are listed but the part descriptions are a lot more vague than Buick provided. And Olds indicates different p/ns for the '73 but that may be inaccurate or an incomplete listing.

The '76 Pontiac MPC for the Firebird only lists 1244070 for the SD but calls it the Upper Clamp and doesn't list the 1244071 that I can see.

As far as I can find, the '73/'74 Nova either didn't use these pieces or assigned a different p/n to them.

Don't have any references for the '73/'74 Pontiac X Body to check for usage in them.

Okay, I figured out the '73/'74 Nova. They simply refer to them as "tailpipe clamp" in the respective charts.

Looks like they used the 332607 Upper and 3992572 Lower for 6 cyl and V8, same as listed for the '70-'74 Firebird except SD.

I assume these are similar but for smaller dia. pipe than used on the SD.

So looks like your best bet is to find what you need on a '73/'74 V8 equipped Buick Omega or Olds Apollo.

Thx,the closest one is firebird central, but it's for regular dual exhaust not super duty,so diameter is too small ,I'm going to see if one from a 73-74 x body like a Ventura or Apollo with a 350 is the same . Thank you for your reply
