Default New Dome Light problem --- 1970 Firebird

Hi everyone
I bought a Dome light kit and tried to fit it today but am I missing the point somewhere
All the wires are there so, I disconnected the wires in the boot near the n/s rear wheel arch. Put the new connectors in the dome fitting, screwed the fitting up to the roof, put in the bulb and then tested the light by just connecting two wires up to the battery. The wires got hot and there was smoke inside the car.
So with my trusty electrical tester I found that the Base of the light conducts electricity because of the chrome on it
So when I screw it up it is now shorting to earth ???

I removed the connectors from the base, put them either side of the bulb, again put the two wires up to the battery and bingo, the bulb lights up

So this must be a problem with the base
Any helpful hints will be much appreciated
Any ribbing, because I have done something wrong, will be taken on the chin and lesson learnt

Thanks
Mick

You may have screwed through or pinched the wires under the base. That would be my first guess.

Here is my base after it was fitted and now slightly burnt
I think I will need to scrape the Chrome away so there is no more conductivity between the wiring
Thanks
Mick

All fixed
I sanded the areas where the contacts are fitted into the base, top and bottom. Made sure the chrome paint was removed completely.
All good now.
Contacted the shop I bought from and they have said a few people have made them aware of this problem.

I put a piece of duct tape on the top of the base over the contacts so it doesn't short out against the roof too.

Thanks for the reply
I have done that just to make sure nothing else can short out
