Picked up this dual snorkel to fit the induction setup on my '65 Catalina. It's odd that there are no Thermac valves on it. Everyone I've seen has them. Looks cleaner without them tho, and I don't want them on my setup.

It came off a '72 GTO, but it could've come from another car before that. Those Thermac valves were on everything GM starting around 68? My best guess is it's '67.

Anyone can pinpoint the original application, please share.

Might be aftermarket/reproduction or someone made it.
Pontiac dual snorkel air cleaners that style were 69-72 but had at least one therm ac on driver side.

To answer your last sentence, as far as GM goes in general, I know Chevrolet had several versions of dual snorkel air cleaners, and even some single snorkel air cleaners that did not have any thermac valves.

The 70-72 LT-1 camaro and vette come to mind. Chevelles and Novas had a dual snorkel in early 70 for the L78 and LS-6. Even the single snorkel for the cowl induction setup on 69 camaro and 70 chevelle were without a Thermac valve. Started seeing thermac valves on cowl induction air cleaners in 71-72 Chevelles.

So wouldn't surprise me if other brands didn't have thermac valves on certain applications.

Yup.

Here's a pic of the 70-71 Z28 dual snorkel on my '71 GTO. I just wanted the clearance for a Holley carb with a "similar to oem" look and no air doors

Only have 2 sellers pics. It’s in transit still. The Q Jet vent hole is in the same spot as other Pontiac dual snorkels. And the tapered shape and length of the snorkels, same a Pontiac. Didn’t note the cover shape.

Definitely not Chevrolet, posed question earlier, as the style of snorkels is wrong, & now with the provided pic have confimed the lack of the locating notch & center hung float bowl clearance stamped into the base of a long snorkel Chevy bases. Chevy bases are totally different than Pontiac.

The center stamping of the base pictured above is definitely Pontiac ('70-72 Pontiac half inch drop base). There is the stamped relief pad for where the thermostatic sensor would attach, but neither of the holes are present. Will be interesting to hear when in your hands, but its possible they been welded or brazed up then bodyworked.

On the snorkels, they def are of the production size & shape for a mid '69- 72 Pontiac production Pontiac dual snorkel aircleaner. With no pods/flappers, or heat riser attachment on the bottom of the drivers side snorkel, closer examination is needed.

I agree, the base is Pontiac. The large vent hole for Pontiac Q-Jets (71 and up) is unique. No notch but I guess one isn’t needed with the vent hole. I don’t have a side pic so I don’t know if it has a oil breather port or not. Appears to have the typical drop for a Pontiac dual snorkel.

Looked at your pic again and missed the pad loted between the snorkels for the valve (stamped in but no hole) so your guess is as good as mine.

The other hole doesn't line up with the bowl vent so have no idea what its function would be. Maybe the prior owner had a different carb on it and clearanced the air cleaner for a choke linkage interference?

Looks just like the later one pictured without the smog apparatus provisions.

The pictures aren't the best. Sure seems like a lot of work to patch up the hole on the bottom of one snorkel, clean up the spot welds on both tops and patch the sensor hole. That's 4 locations and that metal isn't the thickest stuff. Most guys would burn through that stuff and ruin the whole works.

What matters is that the base is Pontiac '71 and up (big carb vent). It's a little beat up too and I don't see any change in the aged finish between the base and snorkels.

Very anxious to receive it and examine!

Yeah, no one would do all that work for no reason. It looks identical to the '71 other than no smog parts. Should look good for your use. You can always pick up a Pontiac lid but on the car, you'll never really notice it anyway.

Inspired by this thread, I went hunting on eBay and others. Found this "restored" unit for a real good price. Whenever it arrives here I'll know if I got scammed or a great deal.

Picture is really small but that looks like the 70-72 LT-1 air cleaner assembly. Believe it was also used on the 73-74 Z/28 with the L82 engine.

They do repop all this stuff and pretty reasonable prices.

Couple things i knew:

Pontiac 68-70 always used the big diameter air filter for the Q-JET Air Cleaners, so that drives the lid shape, and base shape.

Pontiac always had Trumpet ends on Air snorkels, where Chevy rarely had them.
