i cant say for sure whats correct but every 72 formula i have seen does not have the nose emblem, yet almost all 71's do have it. possible the nose was changed at some point? my base model 72 didnt have the emblem either.

google 1972 firebird formula & none of them have it but google 1971 formula & almost all have it. im guessing 72s dont have the emblem.

I can tell you for Certain that a 1972 Formula in Any model did NOT have a front bumper metal Bird. This includes early pre production cars, and early build cars.

it sounds like you have a replacement bumper.

The bumpers with holes for the emblem were unique to 1970/1971 Esprit and Formula models;
Meanwhile the 1970/1971 base and Trans Am shared bumpers which had no holes - and this was also the bumper used for all 1972 models.
