Default Front coil over conversion info. Tip

Someone may have already figured this out but I couldn't find any info on it. So I figured I would share. Might work on 1 st gen also not sure.

afco makes 2 conversion parts to bolt an afco coil over into the factory control arms on a 2 nd gen Ta. I had thought qa1 was the only bolt in.

The bottom is a direct fit however I think some reinforcing will be needed on the lower arm where it bolts in just to be safe. See the pic below.

The top is also a direct fit no drilling or changes. The pic below shows the adapter but I don't have the rubber grommets yet. Also they say to use washers for the snap ring wich I don't like so I am making an aluminum ring with a snap ring grove like the rod end has. I will post a pic when it is done

Basically this kit would convert any set of coil overs to bolt right in to a 2nd gen car with no mods to the car or arms.

I know it's not a big deal with tubular arms, but some classes don't allow frame mods or tubular arms. Not to mention they are $1.000.00. And have no performance advantage except a weight loss.

This afco conversion vs my springs and shocks will save me about 18 lbs total. Plus the performance advantage. The upper control arm factory is 7lbs 2 oz the tubular is 4lbs 4oz so not much savings in weight and nothing in performance. The lower control arm is 15 lbs 3 oz factory and 9 lbs tubular so very minimal weight loss for a 1 k item.

A lot of people have found that there is not enough stored energy compared to a coil spring and the car will work better with a coil spring then the coil over.

Im changing over from the qa1 coil over sping to a conventional Santhuff spring right now. you need a really good shock to control it though.

I am trying to get in touch with roades to get his help but I think he is too busy. I have Afco's for it. I don't really have a ballerina budget like little jack for the santhuff shocks but I could probably do santuff springs. Dwight said he is doing that also.

This^^^^ x2

I have been saying that for a long time and not just because of the stored energy thing. front coil overs, to me, are very application specific. The only thing I actually like with them is the simplicity of ride height adjustments in the front, but agree they are not the best way to go in most setups.

Coilovers should work fine on the front if the shocks are long enough. I find most coilovers are too short and the springs you have to use to stop them bottoming out don't have enough stored energy/travel.
