Default Trans brake..

Finally got my transmission back in and car running. I went ahead and installed a trans brake reverse pattern valve body. I have to get used to shifting in that direction..lol..but what have y'all had to do to the carb to make it leave on the brake if anything. ? I think I remember another friend telling me many years ago, that when he went to a brake he had to switch to a 30cc pump for the squirters. Any advise would get me started in the right direction. Ideally I would like the carb to work either with the brake or without.

You shouldn't have to mess with the squirters. For the most consistent launches, you will use a launch control ( rev limiter) which will have the pedal floored, taking the squirters out of the equation. It took me a while to do it that way, but your 60fts and reaction times become much more managable.

Cool, thanks. What about the suspension? Currently when leaving from a foot brake I have the suspension loaded against the axle brakes. The trans brake will have the suspension at rest. Did you need to add preload to the suspension? I'm a leaf spring car and I see from your avatar, looks like yours is coil spring.

I have ladder bars and don't preload. Some folks tie in the line lock to help hold the car still when on the brake, but I don't see myself ever doing it since a malfunction of that magnitude can get out of hand almost instantly. I also think its against the NHRA rulebook, but Im not sure.

My carb is adjusted and set as if you were foot braking. No different set up for the trans brake, I tried to go smaller on the accelerator pump shot, did nothing but kill drivability.
My car loves the shock from the trans brake, Foot brake I 60' about 1.41 off the trans brake I just had a best of 1.34 Saturday. Usually averages 1,36.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the responses guys. I will most likely make the first few passes without the brake. It's a new motor combo and want to iron out the kinks before adding the trans brake to the tuning.

you may find you will need to do some rear shock tuning now -- depending on hp level and car weight and play with the launch rpm.

Good point. When I set the rear shock adjustment it was by following the recommendation of CalTrac for a foot brake car . What rpm do you guys set your 2 step at? I'm buying a 3 step.

I launch mine at 3800rpms. I notice the higher you launch the faster your reaction time is. If I start red lighting I will lower launch to to 3600 and that slows up my reaction time a tad. I launched one time at 4600 rpm and it pulled the wheels to high for comfort. Didn't like looking out the side glass to see if you are going straight

Start low and go up, don't do what I did after a converter change, which is to leave it set at "all of it" and forget to change it back down, then let go of the button and put it on the bumper. Holy cow.

I switched over to a 2 step, but still foot braking. It worked perfectly fine with zero changes to the carb, but I did ultimately change out the 50cc pump back to the oem 30cc. Figured there was no sense dumping the extra fuel into the motor when staging. I need to go through the trans this winter and may just move ahead with a trans brake as well.
