Default 5 speed transmission

Thinking of swapping my 4 sp for a 5 sp
Who has replace the 4 speed in there 1967 GTO and replaced it with a 5 speed.
What 5 speed did you buy?
How many other parts did you have to buy to get everything working?
What was the total cost?
How hard was it to make the switch?
what differences has it made?

thanks
alan

Alan, this isn't exactly going from a 4 speed to a 5, but it might give you a ballpark idea. Good luck.

Not a 67 but close. I put a TKO600 in my 64. I was lucky that with new body bushings the car was "tight" enough to where no cutting was required and it just dropped right in. I converted from an automatic so my conversion was a little harder but all and all not a big deal. I was of the notion that I would have to pull the motor and trans together if I ever needed to change the clutch but thats not true. I had to change the flywheel week before last and was able to get it out in the car.

i have a muncie m20 in my 69 firebird, i considered a tko or tremec, but in the end i decided on a richmond 5 speed. I like the first and 5th gear ratios better for my application, and It just made more sense to me to not have to worry about enlarging the trans tunnel, spending 8-900 on a quick time bell, etc. The shifter should come out in the right space and all i will have to do is change the yoke and a trans cross member. I am going to upgrade to a prw flywheel and obviously differnt clutch. I have a lakewood bell, but i am not 100% sure i want to put that in. I have not done the swap yet but have all the parts. Maybe over 4th july weekend i can update you.

I have 65 GTO and replaced the Muncie M20 with the new Tremec TKX 5-speed....the best thing I ever did to the car - a real game changer.

That is my plans for my 65 GTO. I picked up a "race" straight cut gear Nash/RIchmond 5 speed. Going with a Quick Time. Had a buddy years ago grenade the clutch in his 65. Lakewood is kind of bulkier.

From what I've seen/read, the Tremec TKX 5-speed is the hot ticket right now.

So it looks like the input shaft on the tkx is different than on the muncie 4 sp. So that must mean that you will have to change out the clutch plate correct? What other parts do you need to purchase or replace to make the swap from the muncie to the tkx 5 speed.
thanks

Here's a quote from another thread about this:

you won't need a poly mount and all that other stuff they tack on. They generally like to add a hydraulic clutch setup too, and that's not necessary either.

Just the trans, a shifter, the short speedo cable, and a C6 yoke will get it done.

Put a tko600 in my 67 in 2018. Got the kit from silver sport. As join said You just need a new clutch disc. Had to cut the tunnel. If i waited I would have gone to the new TKX. But the tremic is great with no problems. Had to dial in the bell housing but that was no problem. Shifter cam thru where it should in my console. Kit had everything needed. After the trans was in it I took the measurement needed and called it in and a new driveshaft was at my house in 2 days.

Go for the TKX and don't look back.

Like I was quoted saying above, you won't need a ton of stuff to convert a car that is already a 4 speed.

What you'll gain is a nice improvement with a 2.87 first gear, and an overdrive that will drop cruise rpm about 900 rpm. I generally find that change alone has been giving me a solid 4-5 mpg gain in gas mileage without even touching the engine. Completely transforms the car and improves the driving experience 10 fold. You'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

Usually on a 4 speed car, I could get the swap done for around $3500. Sometimes a bit more if I decide to do an aftermarket cross member, but with prices ever changing and the cost of things right now, it's going to be a little more expensive at the moment.

I am putting a TKX behind a L84 in my 71. Engine/clutch interface is same place as stock. I mocked it up in car earlier this week and the stock crossmember will work well with a spacer.

One thing that you may look at is the shifter pops out of the floor at centerline, not offset like a Muncie. Hurst has a solution for this - found it on a Corvette forum. You would need to order the trans with this already installed.

Tko 600 in a 64 replacing an m20. As others have said it fundamentally changes the driving experience. Highway is a pleasure now.

No reason not to have a TKX in just about every car. Fits with no issues, great gearing, STRENGTH, etc.

My favorite shifter to use is the White Lightening from American Powertrain.

It is not only offset like mentioned, but it's infinitely adjustable and can be turned any number of ways to perfectly center the shifter in the console. It also has double adjustable center springs so I can set the tension to my preference for both the 2-3 gate and the 4-5 gate.
I also like the single vertical countersunk bolt holding the shifter on for times when I need to R&R a console. Rather than mess with the 2 stick bolts that are sideways, which can sometimes be difficult when working inside a console, I can just stick an extension straight down at the counter sunk bolt and remove the stick in seconds.

Just another FYI about that White Lightening shifter. A feature it has that I haven't seen on other 5 speed shifters......yet Is a reverse lockout when in 5th gear.

So when downshifting to 4th, the spring loaded gate, and a lockout from reverse, automatically pulls the shifter down to 4th gear without the chance of catching the reverse gate. You can just pull straight back without even thinking about it, and it just drops into 4th gear.

That's been something I've really liked about it.

I am not seeing how this Lightning shifter solves anything.

Here is a pic thru the stock Muncie shift porch with a TKX installed.

Note how the 6 bolt shifter mount plate is almost completely hidden under the floor pan. Also note that for correct driveline angle the right rear shift plate screw will require the floor pan get a few thwacks to clear.

There is no way this shifter will function here without the pan/porch being opened up 2-3" to the right. This is why the Corvette guys are using the Sidewinder shifter on the TKX, though it is not cheap - runs about $3,500.
