Default draw cable pump jacks & hit-n-miss engine

77 Trashcan submitted an interesting "ID this" post yesterday. Read it late last night. Figured few on this site have ever ran across a hit-n-miss engine & the following associated harmonic noise "out in the country". There's oil in those hills! Yes, OK is full of hills AND trees, the majority of it is far from flat.

The sound of the old 1 cyl engines bring back many memories as a kid. Exploring in relatives pastures, as well as neighboring pastures (prob shouldn't have been there). There were areas you were going to visit with family & you'd ride down a country road with the windows down & hear the puff puff puff. It also wasn't uncommon to hear the metallic clanking noises off in the distance.

Most of these "rigs" were inactive by the early 70's but a few were still in use. As a young teen in the mid 70's, can remember quail hunting near several other such rigs. Also helping salvage an abandoned draw cable setup in a pasture, where the wells at the time had been considered "played out". Decades later, horizontal drilling tech changed that.

I still see them in nostalgic ice cream makers.
