Good luck finding Carillo or Oliver rods UNDER $1,500 per set. Crower Sportsman rods are nearly $1,000 per set.

Agreed. Carillo or Oliver are indeed nice rods, just not needed here. A ton of motors out there making big numbers on Eagle rods and living just fine. My 455 with iron heads turns 5800 out the big end in the 1/4 with TRW pistons and get this, "CAT" I beam rods. No problems to date. I would feel fine running either Eagle or Tomahawk 4130 rods. Both rods will be running fine when the block splits in half.

I've used Tomahawk 5140, 4130, 4340 forged rods for more than 6 years in numerous builds- they are good rods and reasonably priced. If you want Oliver or Crower rods you'll have to pay for them- good quality rods but overkill for a street engine IMO. The Tomahawk rods have been on the market for over 10 years now, and are proven performers at this point. PPR sold them for over a decade and we all know Ace Brewer would never sell junk.
For a 500 hp build with e-heads I would step up to either a 4130 or 4340 I-beam. I used Tomahawk 4340 A-beams in my 455 SD Performance e-head build- they're the lightest forged steel Pontiac rod on the market (690-710g), and rated to over 800 hp. Tim Corcoran sells the Tomahawk rods now- give him a call and he'll set you up. Geno |
