Scott Burton won Super Stock, with his Pontiac powered 3rd gen !
https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r=100#indextop AND, his wife got 3rd place in Stock, with her '74 Formy they call "Grimace". She cut a decent light, but broke out. Her opponent cut a .003 light. That's hard to beat. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r=100#indextop BUT, she did cut one perfect .000 light during elims. AND, she did it against her own son ! Go ahead Mom ! https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r=100#indextop Last edited by ponyakr; 08-29-2021 at 10:14 PM. |

'69 T/A
In E-1, Bruce dialed a 10.65 & ran a 10.622.
"...10.622 124.17..." The C/SA index is 11.40. So the car ran .778 under, which makes that 10.62 a pretty respectable number, especially for the 1st race. Unfortunately, Bruce cut a slow light & got treed. But hey, we now have another solid 10 sec Pontiac powered Stocker ! Will be interesting to see how much more he can get out of it. Yep, time for the "Big Go", once again !
Today's schedule calls for Stock & SS to get 2 time trials, then 4 rounds of class runoffs. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop |

In Stock Q-1, Rob Holmes was #21, Randi Lyn Shipp was #46, Julie Biermann was #50, & Bob Michael was #71. Todd Kuhn was driving a '73 Bird. It obviously had problems. He got the lowest qualifying spot of all the Stockers that weren't DQ'd.
https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop IF all this info is correct, Bruce Noland is NOT driving his '69 T/A, & Chris Stephenson is NOT driving his '68 Bird. May have already mentioned this. Tommy Pettigrew swapped over to Chevy power, in his 2nd gen Bird. In SS Q-1, Scott Burton was #37, Stacy McCarty was #48, Travis Morgan was #59, Bill Rink was #68, & Monte Howard was #100. #18 was Irvin Johns, in an '05 Cobalt. That car MIGHT be Pontiac powered. It COULD be the same car Todd Frantz drove to the GT/FA class win, in 2019. If anybody knows for sure, please post that info. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2019#indextop Last edited by ponyakr; 09-01-2021 at 01:35 PM. |

Bob Michael got his class win !
https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop He's raced lots of Pontiacs, for a long time. Glad to see he's still building Pontiac powered winners ! The person editing these results apparently didn't read the numbers correctly. Bob cut a better light & went quicker. But here's what the editor wrote. " Michael with the starting line advantage, but Gere chases him down for the class win. He wins his eighth Class trophy." In SS, looks like Irvin Johns & Bill Rink have a good chance to pick up their class win. But, you never know how much some guys have been "sandbaggin", during qualifying. I noticed that some of the Stockers were going 2 tenths quicer than their qualifying time. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop Last edited by ponyakr; 09-01-2021 at 05:53 PM. |

Irvin Johns got the GT/EA class win, in an All-Pontiac final, against Stacy McCarty.
https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop If my info is correct, the Johns car is a 428 powered Cobalt, which is the same car Todd Frantz drove to the GT/FA win, in 2019. |

Thanks again and always for the Pontiac updates. Really appreciate it. Glad to see my friend Rob Holmes has his late father's Firebird running well. He doesn't race as much as he would like but is a capable driver in a nice car. Nice to see Bill Rink do well too. Bill made it to the Ames Pontiac Nationals this year for the first time. His 74 GTO pretty well answers the age old question of "is it possible to make a Pontiac 350 really run hard?"

"... Glad to see my friend Rob Holmes has his late father's Firebird running well..."
Rob Holmes had the only Pontiac to survive round 1 of Stock. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop And, he had the highest qualified Pontiac Stocker, @ #25. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...er=30#indextop Last edited by ponyakr; 09-02-2021 at 11:59 AM. |

Found these 3 pics from this race.
They are Randi Lyn Shipp, Julie Biermann, & Monte Howard. All 3 have been to Indy several times. But the '78 T/A that Monte is driving has been there LOTS of times. Monte was driving it a few of those times, beginning in '07. Before that, Ken Shawver was driving it. , It shows up on DRC in 1998. Won it's class in '03 thru '07, & again in 2010, & Was #1 qualifier in '05. Hey ya'll, it ain't half bad to win class at Indy 5 years in a row AND to be #1 qualifier any year ! To me, this is a famous Bird ! https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2005#indextop Here's what Monte sent me in an Email. "The 2010 US Nationals class win was a pretty good story. We went to Indy with a fresh engine, after our first run it was not quite as fast as I would have liked, second run it was slower. I cut the oil filter apart to find the filter full of bearing material. Not in a very good mood. I sat in the trailer thinking we were done for the weekend, I came up with a idea. Thinking my first qualifying run would get us qualified for the show. I decided to head home and put our spare short block in the car. Left the track at noon on Thursday thinking I could have it back together for first round of the eliminator on Sunday. With the help of good friend Dean Davies we started pulling the engine around 2:00 pm Thursday afternoon. By midnight we had the engine and trans out, pulled the heads, Intake, Cam & Lifters, timing chain, oil pan and pump off the hurt engine. My friend was tired and went home at midnight. He asked how long are you gonna work on it. I said well I am gonna work as late as I could. Knowing that if things went smooth that I might be able to make it back to Indy the next morning for class eliminations . I drug out the spare short block that consisted of a block, crank, rods and pistons. Cleaned up all the parts, degreed the cam in, assembled the rest of the engine and had it in the car and fired up at 3:00 am. Loaded the car and all the tools, went in the house took a shower and slept for 45 minutes and then left for Indy. With only 45 minutes sleep we ended up winning class on Friday with a spare short block that I had to scotch brite the rust out of the cylinder walls. My friends that I parked with at Indy knew when we left Thursday that our plan was to be back Saturday night or Sunday morning. They where shocked when we pulled back in our pit spot Friday Morning. Bill Rink walked over and asked where I went. I told him the story and he said “you are nuts”. " Last edited by ponyakr; 09-03-2021 at 09:41 AM. |
