Default Gulf oil pencil

Found this old Gulf oil pencil cleaning out my moms place. How do a phone 24🤔
It has oil in the top with an air bubble in it, it’s gotta be 75 years or more old.

From the days before telephones had dials or buttons. You picked up the handset and waited for the operator to say, "Number please?"

If that place were to still exist, the last two digits of the phone number would be 24. As more people began to have phones, the providers just added a digit to the left, until we have current 10......John
