Default Reclining Seats

Does anyone have any experience with taking these apart? When I got this car the seat would not recline. I have taken it all apart. I have lubed the actuator cable which now works freely. I have taken the main cylinder ( I'm assuming that it works like an air shock does ? ), out of the seat frame. I can't get the extension rod to come out of the assembly. I have soaked it for a week in Mystery Oil and still nothing. The cylinder itself looks self enclosed and I don't think I can take it apart to see what makes it work in there. Any ideas? Does anyone rebuild them? Thanks for any info.

need something more agressive than mystery oil..try sea foam deep creep..

theres nothing to them, if the cylinder is stuck, you found the problem

Thanks for the info. I didn't think it was rocket science but ya never know with these old bastards. Lol. I was thinking that if it was too bad I'd have to cut it open with a disc and then reweld the cylinder back together, but would rather not try that as I'm sure they are pretty scarce to get being such a rare option.

a hair dryer and some deep creep will get it..be careful, the actuator on the cylinder breaks easy

if ya take it apart, you cant get it back together...it prob has a rust spot thats catching in the cylinder...

ive had them locked up so bad, it seemed useless, but that deep creep is incredible stuff

Can that CYL be removed while the seat stays in the car?

I would say no to that question. You have to peel back the skins to be able to get to it. I had to recover mine, so it didn't matter. I had to take the whole seats apart.

I had the same issue with my reclining seat. I soaked the cylinder in Evaporust for a week and I was able to free it up after that.

Just pulled my seats completely apart. I have never seen the reclining option that the passengers seat has. I have the cylinder out of the seat, not sure how to test it. I have feeling its stuck. was trying to figure out how it worked

Amazing how many extra parts are in there compared to a std seat. I have the 68 fisher manual, just looked after reading your post and it has info on the reclining option, but no specific info on the cylinder. Thanks for the tip, I didn't realize that info was in a book at had right at my fingertips

A good way to test the cylinder is to install it back in the seat frame and test it out. Reclining seat needs the lever to be pulled to recline the seat but it will return to upright without having to pull the lever.

I have my seats completely apart, I bead blasted & repainted the bases & all the hinges.

I put the cylinder in the vise & was able to pull the rod out, but it doesn't lock. Just pops right back in. is it infinitely adjustable, or does the internal rod have notches in it? Maybe I didn't pull it out far enough. Damn strong spring in that bugger.

Anybody know if those escutcheons were used on any other cars? I was looking again & seems like I will probably have to paint the metal retainer so it looks sorta finished?
Guessing its a one year only design & not many 68's had the head rests it would seem.

That’s two nice options mine doesn’t have, so I’m no help with reclining seat and head rests.

Maybe? Are you thinking then pass the screws through the vinyl? At least then the metal underneath isn't getting modified in case some are ever reproduced. (I won't hold my breath on that last part....)

So I am testing this cylinder. Its not stuck at all. I can't extract the rod without turning the lever on the side of it. I assume this is how it is suppose to work. If I hold the lever I can extract it, but it will slide right back in. Should it lock? or am I misunderstanding how this works.

Would seem the release lever stops it from pulling out only. Maybe its time to look closer at how the whole thing works. I just wanted to test it before butting anything together
