I have a REPOP.. I didn't get that one off the Nova. If you remember I said " I want to take that cap" I didn't take it. Their are a couple oif different styles of this cap, one has bigger ears than the other. It was used atleast thru 72 so I'm sure that you have one...

Here's an nos one that I've had for years. This is the small ear style you are mentioning. RC15 - 861050
This is the other style solid rivet with the larger rounded ears, still nos GM. Looks totally different on the backside. Here is an example ebay nos one, or nearly so, of the small ear and shows the backside and the rivet. Might be better pictures. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-62-72-Ca...ec9b30&vxp=mtr If you look at the repro from inline tube, while very nice, it is the style with the larger more rounded ears. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1966-72-GM-S...1c2899&vxp=mtr This guy is Israel has a bunch of them for $44 plus shipping!!! http://www.ebay.com/itm/ORIGINAL-AC-...c5dea1&vxp=mtr Wow, I like the print on the label he has. Very cool...... .

I always thought the big eared style was correct for late 60's through '72 cars. Does anyone know if this smaller eared cap was correct for '73 and later?

I spoke incorrectly earlier as the current cap I have is a RC15 with the small ears, that I know is incorrect. Just another one of those things that get changed out over the years.

hollow rivit for 69 to 72..its why correct NOS exaples are 300 to 500 bux
solid rivit like pic'd 66 to 68 small ears are service pieces they where made by stant..and are easier to find in a stant box than a GM box

So hollow rivet, BIG ear is correct for all 68-72 Firebirds. 15 lbs?

Good information here. Craig, you could make a mint machining out the rivet centers on the reproduction RC-15 caps!
Steve and Brian, thanks for the good word on the RC-33 caps... got an NOS one ordered and on the way!

This will throw a wrench in Marks testimony.......Here's two originals I have.....both are different. I believe the top one is the original one on my 72 350 Lemans....no divot and the AC is on the left side. Not sure where I picked up the bottom one, but it has the Divot AND the AC is on the right side.

well..im not an expert on the rivit but i sell a bunch of them..all i can find..and the hollow rivit is right for 69 to 72...but there could be anomalies...i never say never..but...
i cant give away solid rivit caps...they bring pennies, because they are known in the world as early ive sold may many hollow rivit caps..many..and they bring a premium....like 10 times the price because thats whats in demand...weird stuff happens and we all know that.. BUT big eared hollow rivit is what i know...and will stand by it til proven wrong (and ive been wrong a bunch) spend a little time on ebay and watch prices and whats listed as what..its a good market indicator

Hey Mark, I wasn't dissn' ya at all...just throw'n a curve ball in there....I don't know what's right, or wrong. So you saying the hollow rivit is the accepted correct look out there now?
Which is the right side the AC supposed to be on....maybe I have that anomaly cap!?

This started when my Buddy Brewster was looking at buying a NOS R-15 on ebay he told me what the guy wanted for it and I fell out of my chair. I'm not here to tell anyone what is correct for their car, I'm just trying to replicate as best I can the HOLLOW rivet design that seems most desirable. So looking I found 2 different repop caps, both are correct in their design when compared to NOS caps. I bought samples of both and figured out how I could best replicate the original hollow rivet used on each cap. The two caps are both nice quality caps, I just can't figure out why the manufactures don't do the rivet correctly.
I was able to get a good result in my opinion on both types of cap. So it can be done and I'm sure some of you could do this yourself but for those who don't want to risk screwing up a new cap I will do it for you. Anybody that has interest in these can PM me for details. PLEASE POST YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS PROJECT Here is my current ebay auction for my 2nd design prototype http://www.ebay.com/itm/331494791168...84.m1555.l2649 1st design mine on left as bought on right. This one is a bit funny as I got this picture from a current Ebay auction. The seller bought the hollow rivet cap from me last week and is know selling his solid rivet cap. Here is the auction from the guy who bought my 1st design prototype. I did buy this auction and I will be converting this one. http://www.ebay.com/itm/261799996640...;3AMEBIDX%3AIT as bought after new rivet 2nd design as bought after new rivet Last edited by Norwood; 03-09-2015 at 09:59 PM. |
