It appears...that by 1980...most T/A buyers did not know...or CARE....what was under the hood.....as long as it was wrapped....in a BIG chicken...
Considering the fact that 90,000 79 TA buyers ended up with a 403 olds under the hood....the IMAGE was what they were after... I bought MY new turbo TA....because I knew the platform was going away......and wanted T-tops,AC and rear discs...and the Turbo was the "icing"...on the cake....er... hood... Pontiac was WAY ahead of their time......with all the extra stuff under the hood......Compared to my non-air 78...it was a nightmare... Last edited by Green Hornet; 06-02-2018 at 03:45 PM. |

Dan's been piecing all the loose engine paraphernalia together to see what's missing. He has a spaghetti of vacuum hoses that tie into a 4-line female connector to the air cleaner base it appears, but the receiver (male receiver) is missing. Does anyone know or have a picture of this piece? We couldn't find the vacuum routing for it either and not sure where all the loose ends plug into. Thanks!

i dont recall a 4 port connector like that on any 301t ive seen, but 80 could be different from 81., heres the 80 vac diagram, & i dont see a 4 port connection in the air cleaner. could it be for the charcoal canister?

Will look Dennis. Still have my modded 80 SE, mothballed it 30 years ago. Worked on and modified for performance nearly a dozen 80's and three 81 Turbo 301 cars in the early to mid 80's. In mid 80's, also converted my best friend's 81 Turbo Formula to '80 turbo Qjet, 444 turbo distrib, and most '80 vac harnesses. Pontiac actually offered the 80 set-up on '81 export turbo cars. The most critical rubber vac/pressure harness is the one that plugs into the top of the PEVR bulb on top of the PEVR block. that set of lines references the turbo Qjet to boost.
Personal '80 turbo times, only made it to the track twice. -14.56-14.62 in the summer heat @ N Tulsa strip 34 years ago, in cooler temps who knows, no better than low 14's would be my guess. -13.09, also @ Tulsa. fun on the bottle, custom NOS system. not easy to get the car to hook. powerbrake to 1700 rpm, walk it out, then two car lengths out, flip the hidden arm switch & hang on. Needed the good Lakewood J bolt traction bars I'd picked up used, but they interfered with my VSE 1" rear bar. Car was setup for hard cornering, Herb Adams bars, Koni shocks, 255 60 NCT's, battery on lh trunk ledge, bolt in subs. Lot of fun. Lot of blown $$$$, by '86 had lost interst & was buying early projects.

Thanks Green Hornet and 78w72. We've got an assembly manual with the illustrations, but it didn't help much. Maybe 3 of the ports plug into the PERV and the 4th ties into another line??? We'll check the charcoal canister too.
OHP, Thanks for the info Roger. You had some good running Turbo cars. The schematic looks like it shows the PERV block tying into the air cleaner base, or what looks like it could be the air cleaner base...the bigger circle drawn with the arrow from the PERV drawn to the 1-2 o'clock position. Dennis, in looking at the pics you put up, I don't remember a 4 port canted position rubber plug with 4 lines coming out. Will have to look at my '80 and see what's up with the temp switches that clipped off the aircleaner base. On my '80, I removed the pot metal hood block off plate, as well as the hood insulation pad, and installed a 1 & 1/2" drop base 14 x 3 aircleaner. Upon doing that, dropped the hooked up temp vac switch down next to the rear drivers side of the alum carb plenum. Believe that switch has a green body to it and only 3 hoses, will have ck the car out this weekend. The only vac lines I terminated dealt with the TVS to the EGR valve. Removed the switch and capped the intake.. On half dozen cars we also removed the smog pump, and on all but one capped the smog passages on the front of the heads, removing the smog distribution tube. In eliminating the smog pump and single groove wp pulley, went with a two groove '77-79 301-400 wp pulley. Will keep an eye out for the now over 35 years old HO Racing Special Application Power Kit sheets. those sheets listed the primary jets & rods and secondary rods supplied. I always had a hard time figuring out what power piston spring that was in the HO Power kits. If cant find the sheets, will open up the original turbo Qjet and write down the number /letter codes. Seem to remember the jets were 74's.
Installling a freer flowing monolith cat converter like an old Dynomax as well as better flowing mufflers would help exhaust flow a bunch. With no Pure Stock type restrictions to address, I simply made my own parts store "Test Pipe" as in the Fall of '79, none were avail with the ball type flange. That took a trip to our biggest local latemodelsalvage to cut off the ball end off a damaged cat converter. I've always wanted to dump the pellets, then cut up the top of my original cat converter and insert a slide together 2 piece straight piece of pipe, then TIG up the internal pipes and the case. Where the small mufflers resided, I replaced each one with a piece of straight pipe. The turbo itself quiets the exhaust down quite a bit, nowhere near as obnoxious as running straight pipes on a conventional engine. That said, 75 on urban expressway and letting off the throttle under a large overpass created quite a roar & I was chased down, ticketed, then hauled off to nearby local jail by one of two police cruisers that was turning left above the overpass & down the on ramp Thankfully, an old girlfriend was with me and the T/A was not impounded.

Hmmm....makes you wonder if these vacuum lines are from another application, but probably not. Hopefully some light can be shed on this soon and we appreciate the help and interest form you guys.
