rear pinion seal...
Hi fellas:
I have a '74 T/A auto with a mildly built 455 that I bought a couple years ago. When I towed it home there was a rear pinion seal leak (among many other issues/another story) and my mechanic changed the seal when he did an engine swap. It didn't leak last season or most of this season. I got into a tussle with a newer challenger the other day and noticed it is leaking again. He seems to think it may be a worn bearing issue or the yoke is damaged. Is this a common problem? Being so late in the season, I am hoping if I keep on eye on fluid level maybe this is something to tackle in the spring. Also, would it tend to leak more driving vs sitting or no matter? Thanks

Crush sleeve is probably damaged and not giving the pinion any support causing the leak,
I’d tear it apart and inspect the crush sleeve Yoke might also be damaged and have a wear groove in it |

What would cause this type of damage? Hard launching or just wear and tear?

Person that replaced the pinion seal didn't replace crush washer or didn't put nut back to same position it was at.

Sometimes the area between the pinnion shaft, and the spline inide of the companion flange will leak also. When I replace pinion seals I use a chisel to mark the pinion shaft, and nut, so it gets tightened right where it was previously by just re aligning those marks.
I also take some RTV, and seal the yoke splines and washer under the nut, one less place for lube to leak out. As has been already been mentioned, the area that the seal rides on could also be worn undersize causing the seal to fail prematurely. They sell sleeve, and seal kits for many such applications to give the new seal a new surface to ride on. The other alternative is to buy a new yoke. Before disassembly, you may want to check for any play in the pinion bearings. Of course a failed, or loose bearing will cause the seal to leak. Just a few things you may want to check when you dive into the repair. |

I find for sealing splines to a yoke or anything like that instead of RTV I use hylomar M it’s stays the way it comes out of the tube just about forever and can kind of self heal as things move around. It’s good stuff for this type of seal . If you’ve never tried it give it a shot you’ll really like it. We use it on airplane engjne cases too works amazing. .
