13.99 - 7.50 sec. cars must wear a snell or SFI, approved helmet. For ET cars the approved numbers are,,,,Snell 90, 95, K98, 2000, or SFI 31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A, 41.2A specs...//... Open bodied, supercharged, front engine cars Spec. Snell SA90, SA95, SA2000, or SFI Spec.31.1A, 31.2A...///...SFI31.1A, = Snell SA helmets, are open face,,,SFI 31.2A = Snell SA full face...///...SFI 41.1A = Snell M, open face. SFI 41.2A = Snell M, full face..all good to 7.50 secs..//..7.50 and quicker Snell SA 95 & 2000 or SFI 31.2A....I didn't realize how screwed up this helmet thingy was until I had to type it..Just buy the cheapest approved helmet that fit your bracket and head. The helmet rules change every 5 years so get the latest date you can get, such as a Snell 2000 and it will be good for 15 years. Example a Snell 90 is good until 2005. The older the date the cheaper also. I like the Simpson and clean out the oil (Brylcream) every 2 yrs... Safety 1st ..

A couple of years ago the tech guy at my local track (235 miles away) told me that my HJC helmet that was rated a m95 was intended for cycle or snowmobile use. Thid didn't suprise me because it's my snowmobile helmet. He told me he would let it go this time but I would have to get a new helmet before the next trip. Am I reading the list corrrectly? It looks like that the m95 rating would be good for my 11.50 car. It was an expensive helmet and I can't see getting another for the two trips we make to the track each year.If you could straighten me out I would be grateful. THANKS

Basket Case the Tech was wrong your helmet is fine. I run the HJC helmet also with M2000 rating & i've raced at Maple Grove & Route 66 which both tracks have a tough tech dept & both approved the helmet.

There are 2 ways Snell or the SFI models are tested. The SA series are for drag cars, the M series are for motorcycle. The SA's are tested mainly for hitting against roll bars, and M helmets are tested against asphalt and concrete, since they are for motorcycle....Safety 1st...

Thanks for the clarification. It was explained to me that the sa rating was tested for roll bar use and since my car has a roll bar the m95 rating could not be used. Now the rating is good for 15 years? That would mean mine would be legal until 2010, right? 15 years for a helmet seems alot more reasonable the the 3 year limit for the seat belts. That rule just drives me crazy.

What a joke the scam between NHRA and SFI is. A two year old, 3" aftermarket belt has to be sent in and re-certified but they will let you race with an original, 30 year old lap belt!

Additionally, don't you think a roundy-round car puts more stress on the belts?
Hmmmmm?

SFI has determined the after 1 yr. of sun and heat the belts loose 50% of their original tensil strength.

Then I'm surprised they don't make you change them every year!

But my point is, you can still race with a 30 year old belt…………

Nylon is a very durable fiber. Very good abraision and tensile strength. It has one drawback though. UV light causes it to degrade very quickly, even Kevlar, which is of the same aramid family.

Agree on the UV issues, there is also the oil and perspiration issues that can weaken a belt too.

For what good belts and helmets cost vs high dollar medical bills, I would gladly change the
belts to get out of the therapy.

Do not understand the 30 year old belt deal though
and think it is a "crock of *****" allowing a driver to run his car down the track at 90 mph with a belt like that. Tech guys should make it
mandatory that if you race you show you have installed new OEM type belt material in the car.

Just my opinion. Tom V.

At the local circle track the sanctioning body does not have any rules regarding belt age. I end up selling them my 3 year old new looking belts to replace their 15 year old, been in the sun, mud, dust, dirt, rain, and snow so long that you can't tell what color they are. It just bugs me that I only get about 6 trips to the track before I have to buy a new belt.

It is an annoyance, but there are plenty of saftey rules that most racers don't follow, which puts everyone's life in danger (C-clip axles is a favorite pet peave of mine) and I'd rather be safer than not.

Having the right helmet, firesuit, and seat belts may just save your life.
