67 auto trans conversion
Doing a manual to auto trans conversion and I am having a hard time coming up with a decent complete "his/hers" shifter and console.
I can get the console base pretty much everywhere but noone seems to be able to tell me what else I need to get to complete it. Shifters also seem to be readily available used or repop so no mystery there, but would like to find a whole set up, I appreciate any input. |

What auto trans are you going to?

Not much to the conversion. the shifter cable comes out of the shifter at the front and goes through a grommet in the floor about ten to twelve inches in front of the shifter, and dead center left to right. There were originally 4 white button spacers under each corner of the shifter about 3/8" high, but any type of spacer the same height could be used. Shifter was held to the floor with fairly large sheet metal screws.

I would think the porch would have to come out and a hole patched. No?

I always planned on going back to the 4-speed some day when I tossed in the auto for drag racing, so I didn't want to do anything permanent. The shifter porch and the clutch pedal don't get in the way of anything, but might not be something you would want to look at. The clutch pedal goes to the floor when nothing is connected to it, and I just put the floor mat over mine. If I were going to get a new carpet kit, then I would probably remove the porch. If I were keeping the old carpet, then I'd just put a small patch panel over the hole in the porch.
Even with the clutch pedal removed, you still have the small brake pedal that will give things away unless it is also replaced.

The last car I converted from auto to manual, the manual shifter hole went right through the shifter cable hole. So going back creates a problem for the cable housing mount. But, that was a firebird. Obviously, according to Mick the cable must farther forward. Mick would know.
