Exclamation 1972 LeMans Sport GT convertible

On E-Bay right now. I owned this very rare car for two years. Any questions about it's history, please PM me.

If I'm correct, 11 cars were built with the 400-4 and M13, M20, or M22 per Fred Simmonds. Can anyone confirm?

Sounds right, at least for '72 LeMans Sport Converts

Would be nice if the current seller had the original block, even if damaged. A very rare & desirable car, hate to see it end of end the realm of thrashed every day driver-hotrods.

He does and its included in the sale. When I owned it, it was FULLY numbers matching down to the starter/alternator/carb.

As for the rarity..no question there. Desirability, not so much. You wouldn't believe the amount of guys that didn't want that car when I had it up for sale solely due to the fact that it was not optioned with the T-41 nose.

It'll always remain a mystery why Pontiac dropped the GTO convertible when Olds kept their 442, Buick their Skylark GS and Chevelle had the SS. I know the numbers were low but really, that was rolling over and playing dead material PMD did that year. It's interesting to see how strong the urge is by owners to create a 72 GTO convertible.

Things they may not have considered; the T41 clip is much heavier than a Lemans clip, esp if you go all out and add ram induction.

The nose is expensive to fix when it gets bent.

those fiberglass headlamp buckets don't grow on trees.

So if you get lucky and get a Lemans T41 convertible to play with, you have to be aware of those pitfalls lurking every time you're in traffic with cars missing brakelamps, drivers arguing with someone on cell phones.
The Lemans basic convertible owner misses out on the oohs and aahs perhaps, but its a cheaper, easier to repair car and that allows you to enjoy it more. A considerable asset for those who like drivers.

A bigger mystery is why the GTO is an option in 72? Let alone not making a GTO vert that continues the mystery.

But, some great LeMans 72 verts exist today.

I heard that alot of the 72 LeMans Verts 400 4 speeds were M-22s

AC adds a bunch of weight to the already heavy vert. I would prefer the T41 over AC in my 71 or 72 400 4 speed vert.

Thanks for the info on the orig block, having it to go back original is a huge plus.. Understand the casual buyer thinking they've got to have the T41 front end on a '72, but personally disagree with you on the looks & know of quite a few others that share the same opinion. I've owned quite a few T41 equipped cars & prefer the cleaner look of the the standard 72 front end (as long as it doesnt have Lux LeMans grilles or bumper guards). Can remember over 20 years ago when I was looking for long time keepers &learned one couldn't get a 455HO in a '72 LeMans w/o a standard front end. My thought was, "Oh well, won't be owning one"

Beeautiful car!!! And what a deal! with an h/o motor to boot! And ever so rare..amazing how so few were built and how many of those survived over the years, including mine (although an h/o car).. that was a lucky find and the owner had no idea what it was other than a lemans convertible!

"A bigger mystery is why the GTO is an option in 72?"

So that the VIN code would not say GTO, for lower insurance prices. The #1 killer of muscle car sales in early 70's was high insurance surcharges. GM tried to get around them.
