Holley 4224 is an aftermarket only carburetor (never used as original equipment). As a general rule, the only company making repair kits for aftermarket carburetors is the original manufacturer (in this case Holley). When the carburetor was in production Holley offered kit number 3-424. This kit was renumbered 37-424; but has been obsolete for years. I have no record of any other kit ever produced for this carburetor.
I am reasonably sure we have all the necessary parts, but no bill of materials; and no way to obtain a bill of materials. Jon. Good carburetion is fuelish hot air.

4224 Holley carb uses EXACTLY the same kit as any
conventional 780 holley. If you can't find one I will send you one as I think I owe you some money for some spindles, Right? Tom V. As far as the Bail on the top goes. I have access to those through another guy

Tom - glad you chimed in here. My point (possibly unclear) was that finding a parts house with a listing under this number was fruitless. Nice to know that a common kit will work; however it takes someone with inside knowledge to be aware of that fact.
Aftermarket carbs give us the most trouble in producing kits due to the lack of 'bill of material' listings. Same thing is true of the major aftermarket kit manufacturers as well. We have bought, borrowed, etc. many aftermarket carbs simply to 'reverse engineer' a bill of materials, and in some cases prints on unique parts. Jon. Good carburetion is fuelish hot air.

Hey Guys!
Thanks for the info.. Any ideas on the Air Cleaner Bail that bolts onto the 4224?? Tom I appreciate the offer but you have the wrong guy.. You don't own me anything as I wasn't the one who gave you the spindles.... But you did give me the idea for trying the 4224 Holley. (-: Thanks, Ed Harley "If you don't know the dog, Don't yank his chain."

Jon,
I know Holleys just like you know AFBs and Thermo- Quads. If you play with them everyday you learn the tricks that are never published in the parts sheets or Carb Rebuild-It books, etc. Don't ask me to tell you the interchanges on the above carbs! LOL! I always try and do my part on the swaps with people on the board, Ed. I believe it was James who sent me the spindles now. Either way you will have a great carb. Call Joe Bunetic in St Louis about your bail for your 660 carb. (618) 397-3580 Tell him I sent you and I will be sending pics of Ford carbs back Registered Mail. Tom V.

Tom - I think Carter published all their tricks. They just didn't make all of the publications readily available to non-Carter personnel
Carter used to print what they called a TFN or Temporary Field Notice. This was a spec sheet which would be printed for the unusual (like the Pontiac NASCAR three-barrel). If the carb ever went into full production (the 3-barrel didn't), an actual spec sheet would be printed. The TFN's were really a high-quality production . These things were mimeographed (for those of you under 30, mimeograph was a byproduct of Mission Impossible - the ink turned invisible 10 seconds after printing ) on the back of Carter internal memo sheets. I have spent hours going over originals with a magnifying glass and retyping. Still don't have a complete set of them. Do you have, or can you get anything on the Holley D series carburetors? Jon. Jon or Tom,
Is the 780 Holley a 4150 or 4160 type?? This 660 4224 is a strange bird and is considered a 4160.. Oh.. Another question.. Would you jet this type of carb the same on all 4 corners or smaller up front and larger in the back like you would on DP or vac secondary carb??? Thanks for all of the help.. Since these 4224 were a center squirter I thought they were a little more designed for a racing 2-4 setup. Tom correct me if I'm wrong.

I remember an old Hot Rod article where Grumpy Jenkins modified the linkage to be progressive and blended in the "rings" on the underneath side fo the body. Man that was in the 70s.
Heck my old 409 I put two Holley 715s on sideways and screwed the linkage (instead of vacuum) for all 8 to dump at once. That was my street car! Luckily gas was 25.9cents a gallan as you could watch the gauge go down!

I ran a PROGRESSIVE 850 center squirter on the street for 3 years and it worked fine with the 4:33 gears I had. Most times the engine was ready for the fuel when the other barrels kicked in and the rpm was up!
Carb must use progressive linkage not 1-1 linkage. Tom V.
