Default Intake and Carb Question?

I just purchased a 1979 GTO, 455 HO, Ram Air and 4-speed. I can not seem to find anywhere what the casting number should be for the intake and what the carb number should be. Can anyone help?
Thnaks,
Al in Maine

Welcome to PY! I'm assuming you have a 70 GTO with the 455 & 4speed.

9799068 is the casting number for the 70 cast iron 4bbl intake

All '70 factory RamAir stick cars received either the 7040273 (49 state emissions) or the 7040573 (California emissions) Ram Air manual trans Quadrajets. Very hard to find as original RA Quadrajets, as fakes there are way too many floating around.

Default Numbers?

'ol Pinion head,

Thanks for the information. Yes, the car is a 70 GTO with the 455 & 4-speed. It is hard to find information on the 455 GTO's. I know I am pushing my luck but can you also help with the numbers for the exhaust manifolds, alternator and distributor? It seems like there is nothing that corresponds to the 1970 455 GTO engines.
Thanks,
Al Barlow

Al,
Alternator will be same as used on a 350 or 400 '70 Pontiac A-body. With factory air conditioning a "700", with no a/c a "704". (many of us refer to these by the last 3 digits. Full stamped numbers were 1100700 (55 amp) & 1100704 (37A)

Exhaust manifolds are late 69 or 70 production dated standard log manifolds, not the '70 Ram Air III ex manifolds. I'd have to ck my racks for sampling of the original '70 log manifold casting numbers, '70 was the year Pontiac transitioned from 97xxxxx to 4xxxxx casting numbers on the exhaust manifolds

'70 455 D-port GTO engines received the 1112012 distributor. Have had several of these. currently have an early A (Jan) of '70 dated "2012"

Welcome Al;

Some good info on PY on these cars, they have been discussed from time to time.

I own a 70 455 RA auto myself, and couple of other guys do as well, with and without the RA , a rare option.

The GTO Assoc of Americas GTO Illustrated Identification Guide by Eric White is a VG reference book for basic codes and part numbers.
It lists each year and has codes/part nus. for alternators, exh mans., rears, trans, carbs, distis, wheel codes, raditaor tag codes, and much more...option codes too.

Performance Years sells them. and they list each model by year and have codes and part number for much of the stamped or dated parts.

DISTI #: 1112012 and many I see (or own) are dated around 9L xx I think or DEC, xx of 1969.

ALTERNATOR: 1100704 with standard w/o A/C 37 amp
1100700 with A/C Rear, other options 55 amp
1100895 with A/C and heated glass rear window 61 amp

EXHAUST MANFIOLDS: there was a change over, (two diff nus.) so I was told, so will let someone else post this...may depend on your build date.

Does your car have a twelve bolt rear?

Couple of others on here that are also (like OPH) well versed on these cars and one member: Held For Ransom is collecting data on these.

Jeff

Jeff,

Thanks for all of the help. Very mush apprecaited.

It would be interesting to see the rarity of a 455 HO, Ram Air, 4-speed with factory hood tach. I also have most of the original build sheet and the PHS docs.

Welcome to the PY forums, Al.

Nice 70 455 GTO. Verdoro Green is one of my all-time favorite Pontiac colors. My very first car was a Verdoro '69 GTO.

I've owned two 70 455 GTOs - a Palomino Copper non-Ram Air car and a Baja Gold Ram Air car. Both were HARD loaded automatics.

Ask away with questions - we'll help you out!

By the way, my Fremont, CA built Baja Gold Ram Air car was assembled approximately 5200 VINs later than your Baltimore assembled car. It was built for California sale so it had a 7040570 (CA auto) carburetor.

The following exhaust manifolds were original to this car . . .

Driver's side exhaust manifold: Casting # 9782810, dated J149
Passenger side exhaust manifold: Casting # 9796992, dated J249

Hope this helps!

Oh, and at some point I'm sure that Mike "Held for Ransom" will chime in. He is our undisputed King of 70 455 GTO information!

Would be nice to see some photos, Al. (hint-hint again)

Good catch on that knob, Forrest. I'd imagine simulated wood to match the '70 Sport Steering Wheel, correct?

Let's see. From build sheet...
WC carburetor (7040273), 97 (7040097) choke.
XC (1100704, 37A) alternator.

1112012 distributor, dates around 9J..
9782810 (LH) and 9796992 (RH) exhaust manifolds, dates will vary side to side (H or I..9).
9799068 intake manifold, dates around J..9.
64 heads, dates around J..9.

Missing M09 (614) special gearshift knob.
Rims look wrong to me, are they the JL codes?

Nice car.

As an FYI, all 5 rims are JL coded. 4 dated July 7th and 1 dated July 2nd.

Block, alternator, distributor, heads, intake, exhaust manifolds, transmission, rear axle, ram air, seat belts, water pump are all original to car. It sadly is missing the original carb but has a 7040462 XA 1970 350ci, California Emissions A/T no A/C carb dated 166or the 166th Day of 1970 or Monday June 15, 1970.

Did find a 2nd build sheet. Purchased the PHS docs along with the window sticker and it does show the T42/601 Hood Air Inlet as an option.

Being painted as we speak.
