All,

I would like to try to put together a what cam works with the retainers chart.

Anyone who has bought the Dog Bones from me if you are up and running, I would love you to post your results along with your block, casting number, what lifters you used, and a picture of your cam card if you could.

I’ll start with mine. 1973 455 block casting number 485428.

Sealed power HT-2148 lifters.

And a custom cam spec by Lee in the picture below.

Thanks again,
Stuart “Stan” Landreth

Great idea Stan, I’ve been following. Is it lift that would cause the problem or something else?

ponchjoe,

Sort of. Most cams are ground with the high point of the lobe roughly the same height (usually about.010” or so smaller) as the bearing journals. The way the lift is increased is by reducing the base circle. The difference between the base circle, and the peak of the lobe is the lift. The issue comes from higher lift has a smaller base circle, and this allows the lifter oil band to drop out the bottom of the lifter bore.

Thanks,

72 455 casting 485428
Sealed Power HT-2148
Lunati Cam

Have around 50 miles on it now. Seat pressure 145, open 360. No lifter noise at all, even when first started after sitting.

Ok, since the beloved HT2148a Sealed Power is a Chinese product now, what lifters do you recommend, HyLifts version A2148?
Thanks

Ponchjoe,

The HT-2148a lifter is a different model lifter than the HT-2148 (notice no “a” on the part number). On the “a” lifter the oil feed hole is raised like the later LS lifters and will not work. The oil feed hole will raise above the lifter boss at lift.

Howard’s has a lifter (my understanding it is manufactured by Gaterman , currently in stock and readily available at many vendors. Some have said they are noisy and are a variable duration design (think Rhoads lifters). I emailed asking this question and the reply is in the picture below.

These lifters will work as a replacement, but you may have to modify the oil feed hole in the block. It’s a really simple modification if the block is fully disassembled.

The photo with the red circle is (circled HT-2148 with the oil hole in the usable location) next to a HT-2148a

The picture without the circle is of the Howard’s (left) next to a sealed power HT-2148 (right)

You would need to open up the oil feed hole (raise it) to allow oil when the lifter is fully down. It would only take a slight chamfer on the hole.

Thanks,
Stuart “Stan” Landreth

Gaterman lifters are a good quality made in China lifter. Another example of domestic not automatically being the best quality. Gaterman website states standard lifter not a variable duration. Around here no one has ever heard of the GP1012 being a VD lifter and appears to be an internet thing.

I haven’t heard anyone talk about the Hylift Johnson version and those are the only HFT lifters I’d ever run.
Any thoughts?

Ponchjoe,

My retainers are for a roller lifter conversion. Does Hylift Johnson make a roller lifter?

I believe they are A2148.

Ponchjoe,

Those will not work. Notice the oil hole location compared to a picture I posted a few posts back. At lift the oil hole will rise above the lifter bore and leak.

Thanks,
Stuart “Stan” Landreth

Thanks Stan, that would explain why no one has mentioned them. Being upside down it didn’t register until I went back and looked at the pic you posted

Just curious. I did a quick internet search and it looks to me like the Gaterman GP 1012 are not available at this time?

I have a sneaking suspicion the Howard’s and Gaterman’s are one and the same.

Anyone have a set of HT2148s they’d sell? I can’t find any

Ponchjoe,

I have bought 3 sets from this eBay seller. I always asked via ask seller a question, “do the lifters match the pictures exactly, especially paying attention to the oil feed hole area?”

I have had success all 3 times.

I do not know the seller other than the purchases I made. I figured by asking the question if the lifters showed up incorrect, there would be no issues returning them.

Not cheap, but we’re correct.

Thanks,
