Proper quadrajet base gasket needed
My 1970 GTO (with 400) has a late 70s smogger intake manifold that is very modified. Today, I replaced it with a period correct 1969 intake that is also modified (plenum is open like an edelbrock). I reused the base gasket and, with carb cleaner, found pretty good leak at the front. The base plate surfaces of the two looked similar enough, but it's just best to get a new one. Is there a prefered gasket for a stock iron intake? Also, is there a better way to find intake leaks than carb cleaner? I would hate to eat the new paint off of this one.

With the '68 & '69 intakes & Q-jets, I always used the 4-hole Mr. Gaskets.
http://www.jegs.com/i/Mr.+Gasket/720...N50aAqwc8P8HAQ But, I assume that if the center is open, the open center Mr. Gaskets should work. http://www.jegs.com/i/Mr-Gasket/720/56AG/10002/-1 Jeg's sells a thin one for $3.99. http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performan...16125/10002/-1 But, there are all sorts of thicker gaskets. The 60482 is 1/4" open center. Never used one. http://www.jegs.com/i/Fel-Pro/375/60482/10002/-1 Butler sells a 1/4" thick open center SPM-68230. http://butlerperformance.com/i-24850...ef=brand:99994 Last edited by ponyakr; 09-28-2016 at 09:38 PM. |

Propane, with an on/off trigger button, or a smoke test machine.... if you have access to one. |

I would use FEL-PRO60061-1 for 1968-74 Pontiac V8 intakes.

We sell every Quadrajet base gasket currently in production. The correct gasket to use would depend on the carburetor number AND the intake it's being used on.
We help folks out with this situation all the time, we require the carburetor number and intake being used to supply the correct gasket.....Cliff

Thanks guys! I tend to use the thicker gaskets. I will look on your website, Cliff.

We only have a couple of carb to intake gaskets listed. There are over a dozen choices and we stock all of them. My preferred gasket for the Performer, Performer RPM, and modified stock intakes is the 1/4" thick open gasket or the 4 hole with a small section snipped out between the secondaries.......Cliff

I use a piece of vacuum hose as a stethoscope.....one end close to your ear, the other to sniff around the carb. You can easily hear a leak, that's how i found my leak.

dont mean to hijack the thread but quick question on this.... i have a SD ported cast iron intake with the notched rear divider on a e-head 467 stroker. what gasket is best for this, the open or snipped out 4 hole? is there a benefit to keeping the primary holes on the 4 hole gasket & just snipping the rear open vs just using a fully open one? |
