Default shifter question

This is the top of the original Hurst shifter that is in my GT-37. It wiggles back and forth (see arrows) about 3/16". Will this go away once I plug the shift handle back in or is there something wrong? Thanks.

It is a 3 speed but it just loosely flops back and forth--no spring tension.
