Converter flash, 60’ times
New combo for me and I’m pretty green when it comes to racing and what times should be etc. my engines dyno sheet is posted. My converter flashes to roughly 3400 off the line. My 60’ times are usually 1.54-1.57. The car is a 72 lemans roughly 3800lbs and using a 4l80e trans, the car runs 11.0’s at 120-122mph currently. Based on dyno sheet should I try to get converter to flash closer to 4K and thoughts on my 60’ times??? I’m thinking I should be able to get a little more out of this combo.

The Hp calculator says 550 Hp at 11.1 s and 539 Hp at 122 mph.

What RPM are you shifting at?

I don’t have a lot of passes on this so I’m trying to experiment with that. Using the msd atomic controller and I’m setting the shift rpm, it shifts approximately 1/2 second after that rpm is reached. The car seemed to like when I had it set around 5600 so probably close to 58-5900 by shift time

More stall will PROBABLY help, but only if you still have traction.
I went through several converters with my old Firebird. Stock converter worked decently for street tires, but I ran slower with a 2500 - until I added a set of BFG drag radials. When I went to a stall that is close to what you have I again ran slower - until I installed some MT's (slicks, then DR's later on). I don't think I'd shoot for 4000 if I were you, but maybe see if they could give it 300-400 more.

All passes made so far are on a set of 295-55-15 ET streets. I haven’t had any traction issues yet. The car has QA1 double adjustable shocks in rear and a HR parts and stuff anti roll bar

I would shoot for 4000 on a converter. Let it flash and use that flat torque curve from 4000 to 5000. Push the shifter at 6200 ( it will probably be around 64-6500 by the time it shifts) and see where the recovery rpm lands at. ..that's just my opinion.

No other thoughts on converter or if my 60’s are pretty good or could use some improvement? I’m aware the mph and ET aren’t matching the dyno sheet. I’m not one hundred percent sure on weight of this thing either tho. I have a buddy bringing his scales down to get a number. You start adding a 4l80e with lockup converter and aftermarket block the LB’s start adding up so we’ll see

60ft look decent to me, but it sure would hurt to try a looser converter

If you're wanting lower ET's, I'd start with a converter that flashes to 4000-4200 and shift it later....looking at the dyno sheet, it probably wouldn't hurt for it to shift at 6600-6700.

Sumped cell in my trunk feeding Holley sniper efi setup , all -8 line. heading to test and tune Friday night to get a solid number on the current converter To give them so they can adjust accordingly and I’ll be bumping shift points up too. Thanks for the input guys. Being a rookie it’s nice to hear thoughts from experience.

Since you have the electronic controller for your transmission, I suggest just changing ONE shift point at a time. I'd probably kick the 2-3 up 200 rpm and see what happens. Play with it until you get it maxed, THEN play with the 1-2. Since first gear is over much more quickly than 2nd, but your lag-time is consistent, your 1-2 setting will probably end up being a bit lower.

Yes I was thinking about trying to change the 2-3 only. Just gotta read the manual and see how to do that or if it’s even possible.

Since you have a dyno sheet, send the convertor out and get it setup right.....the first time. Everybody has their favorite. I prefer PTC.
When you get it back in the car, launch at about 500 RPM below the stall speed and shift the car about peak HP RPM. Since this is the race section, put on a new set of slicks, so you can take advantage of the convertor.

I had a small company in Pittsburgh build the converter and I am pleased with the way it’s working although it’s going to end up taking a few attempts to get what I hope to be a good end result.I was ready to send it elsewhere but I think they will get it where I want it to be. I always have a set of MT 28x10.5 slicks on standby for nights with no starting line.

Your 60' times are as good as mine, my Bird runs 10.50-10.60 at 129. I know my car leaves a little soft though. II f I were you I would look to improve top end of the track. Focus on shift points and where the rpms drop down to after the shift.
