Default Machine shop in Los Angeles (valley)

I used a place called DeGroff's Machine Shop in Northridge...Mark DeGroff the owner is very knowledgable and hands on, an old school guy. He bored a 60 over 389 for me and zero decked it, align hone, etc balanced everything, did some bowl work on my #11s and it came out perfect.

I'm using him again for a YX 400 rebuild.

Mark De Groff's Cylinder Head
18736 Parthenia Street Northridge, CA 91324
(818) 701-5274

Also, I think Ace's Pacific Performance moved to Palos Verdes recently and they use an outside shop that does great work and knows pontiacs too.

Good luck. A lot of shiesters around L.A. L&R did my last short block. They seemed knowledgable, communicated well and turned it around quickly.

Ollie,
Ace is no longer building engines. He selling all of his equipment. Joe Sherman comes to mind. Tom S. can give you his phone number.

I have used Dougans in Riverside exclusively for about 10 years. They have never let me down, and all their work is right on the money. I just picked up a finished block from them last week, and they have another block and heads in progress for me. Another way to judge a shop is their customers, and they currently have contracts with two (maybe 3?) off road race teams.

Riverside would be a heck of a drive for you. It's only 36 miles for me, but I bet it's right at a 100 miles for you.

I've been looking for a local machine shop since I moved back to SoCal in 2000. I've had PPR (L & R) do the machine work on most of my builds and have been very satisfied with the work, but the trip down to the South Bay from Valencia is long and a shop in the San Fernando valley would be more convenient.

I lived in Panorama City (next to Van Nuys) in the 90's- if I had known Barrington Engine was right around the corner from where I lived I would have used them years ago.

I had my last block machined at Pfaff Engines in Huntington Beach. They have a torque plate for a Pontiac - at least for a 4.350 bore.

L & R Machine is where I got all my machine work done except Balancing. Ask to talk to Don or the owner Derrick. They have a torqe plate. And do excellent work. And the guy who actualy assembles the engines, taught ME over 19 yrs ago!!

I have used Paul Pfaff and have NOTHING good to say about the way they run there buisness. Machine work is good. But Paul himself has NO SAY in anything! The guy who actualy runs the machine shop is an ass. They made 2 mistakes a customers block. Then asked me to pay. When you bring them a numbers matching Ram Air 4 block and they bor 1 cylinder OFF center. Then had to install a sleeve because of it! They charged me for THERE mistake!! And boy did I have fun with the customer on that one(it was Dirtman!). And they even said the machinsit made a mistake!

Ace,

How in God's name do you bore a cylinder off-center. Even the old Kwik-way boring bars had a centering feature!

Thats a good question! I wondered the same thing! All I know is I got charged for a sleeve on a perfectly good Ram Air 4 block. And boy was the customer pissed! I had to eat it and do something to make up for it. This customer is well known in Pontiac Drag Days for bein a PIA! And I had to deal with it~!

I will say this was 1 block out of DOZENS! But it most definitly happened!

Wow, I guess all you have to do is ask! and Ye shall receive!! the last motor I did has been a few years, 455 for the GP, Dave of SD Performance was just moving to B.C. from SoCal and he took my heads up with him, I talked to Dave B.and Pete McCarthy when LA county race way was still open and dropped them off for him to take with him up to B.C. They were 6X 4 heads that I had Ported 260cfm and I had a custom ordered a cam from Ace at PPR a Lazer Cam he lent me his Degree wheel/kit to make sure it was done properly.
I will keep this list and thanks for all your suggestions.
