Up until the need for a passport to enter Canada we only showed our driver's license if asked. The usual questions were.. "Where are you going? How long, and for what purpose." Then you were on your way, unless the agent had a bug up their butt and asked you more and pulled you in for an inspection. BTW... if they rip your car apart, it's you that puts it all back together.... if it's not confiscated.

I was only turned around once as the young lady trainee pulled me in for an inspection. They found my unemployment papers over the visor and I was sent back to the USA. I was basicly borderlined. I wasn't working at the time and was not looking for work in Canada. Just on my way to see my girlfriend at the time and go out to dinner. A friend of mine that was a Canadian Customs agent and a Canadian Mounty, also a friend, rescinded it and all was fine again.

/\ not many people realize that if you have a secure enough drivers license, that is sufficient to cross the border if driving;
I have been told that the current Alberta license is sufficient for driving across the border, bot that I've ever tried...

Things must be relaxed a bit in the west, my brother lives in Ont. and crosses a few times a year now ( was almost daily when he was driving a truck!) and he says the only way I can get up there now is with a passport. DL no longer works. Pre 9-11 we were vacationing in Vermont and went to Montreal for a day trip. Whole family crossed with me and wife only showing DL, kids were young and had no id's. No problems at all.

Not true , I’m just outside of Buffalo and we cross into Ontario all the time with a drivers license

NY has what is called an "enhanced driver's license". It allows you to cross into Canada without a passport but is not like a passport.

I believe that's the same term applied to Alberta drivers licenses.

My '70 was built at the Norwood plant. There is a small sticker on the passenger inner fender well that says

General Motors of Canada Limited
William St E. Oshawa ONT. - Seller

I think that was placed there when it was imported into Canada;
Can you share a picture of the sticker?

Default Going back to the topic.....

This thread has slightly gone off topic but to bring it back to the metric/miles speedo component, I had an interesting conversation with my mate last night.

He is restoring and has converted to RHD a 1965 Corvair convertible. VERY rare car for the fact that it is equipped with factory installed air conditioning. His restoration detail on this car is simply stunning.

One day he saw a 1965 Corvair speedo for sale in SWEDEN. Its a Kilometer speedo. Seeing as we use kilometres in Australia, he bought it. Story is, GM sent partially assembled Corvairs to Sweden where they were fully assembled and sold. To reduce some import taxes, if the car had a Swedish labour component and items such as upholstery, battery etc, the taxes were much reduced. They were termed as PKD cars. "Partially Knocked Down". Swedish law says the cars had to have speedos reading in KPH

Apparently less than 200 of those PKD Corvairs were sold in Sweden. If any Swedish readers of this can throw any light on this story, I know my mate would love to hear from you.

pretty much the same think was done for other cars too;
a short while back a kph speedometer for a first gen Firebird was shared.

This is as close as I have come across;
It's a decal overlay;
A local let me have this.

They just put the kybosh on it here.

By "they" I mean the Americans. I'm unsure if the discontinuation was reciprocal. Either way, you are not getting into Canada without an enhanced DL, which is by no means automatically granted, or a passport.

My belief is that US citizens can cross into Canada with out a passport but a Canadian must have one when entering the US by plane, vehicle , or boat

MD is upgrading to the 'smart/enhanced' license. I assume this is what you guys have. I will have to check into that. I have a cdl, wonder if that counts. I guess he didn't want me to visit LOL, he said I needed a passport to cross.

I don't know. I used to go to Toronto 2 to 3 times a month but have not been to Canada since our government deemed Canada another country.

You may be able to cross into Canada without a passport or enhanced licensed, but you may not be allowed back into the USA without one.

Bottom line, everything was fine before 9-11 and the internet.

Once I walked into Canada, about 2004. We were in NY and were doing the Niagra Falls thing and then decided to walk across to Canada. No passport requirements at that time. First of all the young gal on the Canadian border kept asking us silly questions, to the point that I told her I wasn't looking to move to her country just wanted to walk across to that border town for an hour or two. I had no desire to want to live in her country. We were a group of about 10 adults and our 14 year old daughters. She finally let us through.
On the way back across there was no US personnel and you just walked across, almost. The final Canadian side had a turn stile that you had to put a quarter into in order to proceed across to the US. I always felt that was quite tacky of the Canadians to try to get some last minute pocket change from people reentering the US.

That's how socialists fund their agenda.
