Default So is Hagerty Auto Insurance obsenely expensive for anyone else?

Hello all, I am in the process of getting insurance for one of my cars. 70 Bird (Esprit), in the process of frame off resto, Roller/stroker, KRE heads, I told them $35,000 agreed to value, and a 3k mile limit per year, with obviously no driving except to a repair shop, or to and from shows. From reading here, and talking to friends, I expected an affordable number. She came back with $980 a year. If I just wanted comprehensive for when it's being restored, I would pay $698. I'm 26 years old (might be part of it), with an impeccable driving record. The reason this seems ridiculous, is a friend of mine just got insurance through them on his '72 Buick GS, same agreed to value, he pays $298 a year. He is 31 years old. 5 year difference triples my rates??? I spoke to a ouple other companies, they have less restrictions, and a more reasonable rate ($275-$330 a year). What gives?

You should ask them why their rates are that high. I have $30,000 on my 67 GTO with a trailering clause while it's being restored and my rate is well under $200.00 a year. But, I am 60 with a clean record.

Bandit400,

Got my formula insured with them, same restrictions you stated, valued at $10,000 for $166.00. I also took the hagerty plus that includes 50 mile flatbed towing and $100 roadside services which states unlimited for an extra $40.
I'm 51 with a clean record unless you ask wisconsin

Wish I had paid attention to what my unofficial quote was when I did the on-line thing with Hagerty, I do remember very high comp/colli and Liability plus the other bells and horns, I valued my 66 GTO at $42,000 and my lic is clean, quote was near 750 a year. just did it on friday

I pay double what you were quoted for my cars, which have a total value of
$140000.00, but they are pure stock.

Did you tell them that the car had any mods?

Try submitting a request online and see what happens.

Even if your car has mods, that qoute seems WAY out of line.

I pay @ $230/yr for my '67 with $29,000 in coverage with Hagerty. I'm 41 with a clean record. I'd definitely inquire as to what they're basing that rate on and start shopping around.

I may give them a call this week to try and get more details. They did put my car into the "modified" class due to the engine work, but so is my buddy's GS. When they did a follow up call, seeing if I wanted to purchase, I said no due to their price being way out of line. The lady said "we don't try to be the cheapest, but we are the best".

Smile $89/year

For my '72 Grandville convertible, 7K agreed value. I'm 64 and haven't had a ticket in 20 years or better.

Hagerty quoted me almost $1,000 per year on my GTO for a $35k agreed value. I also have an '80's Ferrari and they wanted over $1200 for that at $60k agreed value. All for the priveledge of driving less than 3k miles/year and never taking either car to anything other than car shows. F'ing crazy.

My regular insurance agent tells me that out of all his customers, I have the second-best risk rating. Not that I am in the second tier, but the second lowest risk rating of his thousands of customers. They score your risk as 1 through 30, with 1 being the lowest risk. An average driver is rated a 15. I am rated a 6. I have $200k worth of cars insured with him, and full coverage, no limits, drive all year anywhere I want to go costs a total of $1812 per year for the whole mess.

I've tried all the collector specialty insurers, and they are all the same. The money I've saved over the years by not going with them is almost enough to have paid for my GTO.

As I understand it there is a big difference which state and which area you live in. Detroit would be much higher than Big Rapids. I found Hagerty about 30-50% higher than Grundy's.

I've been with Hagerty for over 16 years. I currently have the LeMans set at 22k agreed upon value, their best roadside assistance and their longest towing option and my policy is a $255 and NO mileage restriction at all!

I'm 39 with 4 cars insured by Hagerty through my Allstate agent. My '67 GTO survivor agreed value of $30k, my '65 GTO street/strip car agreed value of $17K, my '99 WS6 Formula all stock agreed value of $17K, and a '50 Ford traditional custom agreed value of $12K. All four cost me $726 a year for the Plus plan. I had to submit photos of each car to my Allstate agent and told him what I valued them at and that was it. They've never asked for any mileage readings on any of them or for any updated info.

Gotta be your age? You should ask them why, they'll be able to break it out for you.

Mine is $250 a year on $25,000. 52 years old and a clean record.

You can go to Hagerty's website and plot out your premium costs. The nice thing about that is you can plug in different values and different mileages for the car and see how your premium changes. Last year I saved about $260 on my cars by picking the best combination of coverages on each car. I pay a little under a $1,000 for five cars varying in value from $6,000 to $47,000.

Also, when I first insured with them, I listed one of the GTO's as having a modified engine and the premium was double over the other GTO. When I called them up, they stated that many times the value of a custom engine approaches the value of the whole car. They were talking blowers and polished aluminum, and I was talking about an internally modified engine with an aluminum manifold and aluminum valve covers. They stated that without the additional coverage, they would only treat the engine as stock. I said that was fine, and they dropped the premium in half.

Ducks Goat, are you sure that your Allstate policy is an agreed value? I looked on their website and they only list it for boats.

Yes it is an agreed value on each car, got it sitting in front of me. The policy is from Hagerty itself not Allstate, my Allstate agent offers Hagerty when needed.

We have 3 classics on our policy and when we switched from Hagerty to JC Taylor the premium was less than half for the same coverage. Hagerty is good but does alot of advertising which gets distributed among its policy holders.

I can't speak for other ins. companies, but I will say Hagerty was EXCELLENT when our 68 Firebird 400/4-speed was rear ended Dec 09. I called them within minutes of an illegal immigrant, oops sorry liberals, I mean "undocumented visitor" rear ended our car and they took charge right then and there. We were squared away with the car ins. money within days.

They have also been quite helpful in the litigation end as well. I still have 5 ruptured discs in my lower back from the accident. As a side note, the "undocumented visitor" has been deported.

Hagerty was also very good a couple of weeks ago when we went to POCI. On the way our window was smashed by a rock. When we got home, there was a check in the mailbox as I paid the installed directly to speed things along...

I use Hagerty and have two cars insured. My stock 66 GTO and my 63 Tempest SD Clone. Even with my performance vehicle that is raced your rate seems way high. I will check my policy and see what I pay and post it here.
