Why do you think they so quickly brought in the 396/427.

Cammer-6. The W engines-409/348 were still nice motors but their real failing was the combustion chambers in the cylinder that really caused problems. The (I believe) 70 or 74? degree deck surface left the head flat which is good for head flow, not hitting the chamber walls, but that put the whole combustion chamber in the cylinder. This made the pistons really heavy/top heavy. The engines needed a big bore for the chambers so they used shorter crank throws (3.25 in the 348-3.50 in the 409) which forced them to rev the engines higher to offset the lose of torque and they just compounded their heavy weight piston problems. The canted valve head design was still a good one which is why they continued it in the new big block but you'll notice they immediately went to a longer stroke and a smaller bore right off the bat. 4.060 in the 396 and 4.25 in the 427 versus the 409 4.3XX (I can't remember the actual bore dia.). tom s, what heads are you going to run on the stroker? I seem to remember there being a slight difference in the coolant holes in deck of "01" heads & traditional style cast iron Pontiac heads. I have a set of 4C heads in the rack & had interest at one time of having them worked & used in a blow through T301 block buildup.

Tom,
I'm looking forward to seeing the dyno report once Joe has the engine together. If it performs as expected, it will be the perfect "brusier" in a light 3rd Gen F-body.

I have some extra stock 09 rods if you want a free set Tom.
And I take exception to the boat anchor comment Their issue was 2 things chamber in the block made a really heavy piston as it was like a dome eventhough it was flat top. Heavy 3/8 stem valves also. Rods were OK but BBC a little thicker around the bolts. With only a 3.5 stroke they needed to rpm and the heavy piston was tough on that.

My recent stroker '09 made 600HP so not too bad for a boat anchor And remember the Z-11 heads for the factory racers were the original "high ports".
Tom neat project keep us updated-and I agree most the machine shops here are "hurry up and wait".

Skip,
The Z-11 was a "real boat anchor" wasn't it?

I saw a Pontiac Tempest (at a gas station on the 401 about 3:00 am) many years ago with a Z-11 engine in it. The guy was tuning it in on of the bays. (Personal Vehicle).
Yep! IT REALLY SOUNDED LIKE A BOAT ANCHOR! (Not) (;>) He took it out for a road check on the 401 and it ran pretty good (for a supposed Boat Anchor) Tom Vaught

Tom,
Do you think Dyno Don and Grumpy would have called the Z-11 a "boat anchor"?

Tom,
We meant no offense. It was an attempt to open a few eyes and make them look at the record of the 409 in racing.

Z-11 parts go for about what original RAV stuff goes for.
My first hot rod was an '09 Impala-so kind of like that first girl friend you never completely get over-that still looks good to your 40th high school reunion! (Although tere weren't too many at mine this year that still looked hot). But I still love my Ponchos. Tom the offer of free rods still goes.
