Hey Don -
Here are a few shots of the water passage and intake flange. I'm going for this level of intake manufacturing. I'm not sure how far I will get with the details, but I will attempt to add numbers to my intake. That will be interesting to say the least. Clearly a full grain finish to the casting and to have smooth surfaces with straight for that time edges. A finished piece of art. Part of me really is thinking, why in the hell do you want to do this Mike. And I think to myself, I have created a beautiful representation of a RA V motor, now what if Carol Shelby worked for Pontiac. That's the kind of sickness I feel... The completed V is one of the cleanest and accurate appearance models in the US and I take pride in my personal work as a hobbyist. And guess what? I drive the thing like I stole it... And - IF - Carol did work for Pontiac, he would of done this too because it feels natural in design for said vintage period.
This is another project that I have in my head, that will be of reality as well. So many designs, and not enough time. Enjoy... |

I think the closer to stock appearing you can make it the better. The numbers on the ports is a must in my opinion for whatever that's worth LOL. I don't know how many intakes you will sell, but if you try to cover a larger audience you just might recover your investment. I think our audience is limited and sales are not going to be impressive by no means. That being said I guess we do this because we can LOL. I think you have a good man working on this project with you and the end result will be spot on. I can't wait to see the finished product. Happy spending!!!!!!!

Thanks Don for the insight.
My thinking is around 15 units to cover design, tooling, and production. For sure, it will be a short run, but it all really depends upon the end result of the prototype. |

To be honest, I'm not quite sure Tom. This is all just talk at this point. There are so many things that need to be taken into consideration along with a bunch of trial and error, research and discovery. Clearly I will have to make it affordable and attractive to move all 15 units. I really just want to break even and cover my costs plus have two intakes for myself.
Thoughts?

Mike, a little advice and I say that with tongue in cheek!!!! Do not use the cheapest tooling maker and foundry that you find. It cost way more in the long run when you do. Ask me how I know LOL. If you do not have anyone in mind. Give me a call and I can get you in touch with some really good people. Remember you get what you pay for and that is not always a good thing.

Thanks for the advice Don and I always take comments and criticisms with an objective point of view. I really do appreciate it. I firmly believe in quality and I think you can see that by the way I approach my personal car art. If I can get into this production project with my pants still on, that is the goal. Clearly before I pull the trigger on spending thousands on a project, I will have to research much and you will be for sure a first priority contact to see what can be done.
I already have a guy lined up to scan the final intake already, but that is hopefully later this year. We have not even put a die grinder yet to the Ford intake which will be soon so first things first as they say....

It's such a slim market that you pray that you can break even, but with Don and Lynn making heads, I think there is a slightly better chance of this project getting lift off. We shall see. 2500 to 3000 K sounds about right, but hopefully lower. There are too many unknowns at this time to start guessing numbers. |

Cool -
Actually I'm going out with a bunch of college buddies this evening and one guy is a programmer/machinist. We are going to talk scanning the intake once complete. Apparently this scanning guy is big time high end. My buddy Jim was talking about this guy scanning a compete Ferrari body to repair another car because the parts did not exist. Hey that's cool, but how much is it going to cost me to get into my hole.

I wanted to address your comment as a fellow Pontiac fan. I feel that when you share with the community you not only grow, as a said fan, but also meet other people that enrich life as you take the journey of an experience. I feel fortunate to be able to share my experience with others a much as I can, within reason and as always with high regard. Working hard has paid off in my ability to be able to enjoy some nice things in life, but the reality is, I'm a working class stiff like the 99% on this board. Sharing the journey would be empty if you can't experience it with others. The guy with the Ford Tunnel Port intake at whatever gig you were at, might have an opposite and alternative perspective then your perception. You really never know who you are dealing with these days, but the guy at least brought it out to share. Now if he was snotty about it, then he just does not get how to share and the cat should of buried that turd long ago. Realistically, enjoy things for what they worth and let others pass your perception to observe the human condition and see what others may see. Other then that, I scratch my ass just like the rest of us.

Hey Mike,,, The guy was pretty cool about it. Knew exactly what he had & what it is worth. He got a kick out of it looking at peoples faces when they saw it. Quite a few didnt even know what it was. He asked me if I knew what it went on, I said a Pontiac with a bit of modification!!
Keep up the good work Guy!

I was there also and the guy was just doing it to see the reaction to a very rare complete (carbs and linkage etc) intake system. He wasn't doing it to be a turd. I watched him talk to Steve and he seemed like a very nice guy. As we stood there a pair of gentleman came up and commented on the intake. The manifold owner relayed exactly what it was to one of the gentleman. They were pretty impressed but as they walked away I heard one of the gentleman say to the other, and a very typical swap meet/car show statement, the gentleman said, "I had one of those on a truck years ago". I am sure he still did not get the fact that it was a TUNNEL PORT intake. The owner of the manifold is a dyed on the wool Ford man. He said he had one each of the 427 high, medium, and low riser intakes too. It was a treat to look at the intake but I'm sure he would never have sold it. Mark L
