Default Home Carpet question

Need some new carpet in the house ... any comments on Home Depot or Lowes? I've had Home Depot do it before .... installation and carpet were so-so. Not horrible, but not good. Thinking about going with a local shop this time.

Any horror stories or good things to say about the big box stores?

There's usually never a shortage of carpet contractors. Ask around your friends- someone should have a recommendation.

The big box stores send a contractor out, then take a cut - so it costs more. Carpet isn't rocket science (go to their showroom, pick out what you want, they give you a price.)

I did just order garage doors from a big box store, though.

Not sure if the following is option for you Dataway, but I'd bet you know a lot of locals. If you know someone that works sales at a large commercial flooring company, one that bids & works jobs for schools, churchs, good sized businesses, they may be able to put you in a good to excellent grade of carpeting & have very experienced installers that can professionally knock out the job. I went through a friend that's in that biz for hardwood flooring as well as recarpetted a few rooms with a high quality grade of carpeting, & saved a ton over other bids.

We went to Lowes and picked out one of the top of the line carpets. I wrote down the Manuf., Name of style ,color , numbers.... everything I thought the local flooring co. needed. I told them I saw this carpet on-line, (did not tell them the price.) They said they do carry that brand and could get it in for us.The price was a little more than lowes. They did ask me if I saw this on Lowes website. Maybe by the numbers they can tell???

Yep, I am hoping to find someone local ... having the wife ask around at the hospital where she works. Like the idea of finding a good carpet, or type of carpet at the big box and then seeing if I can find it from a local company. Only looking at about 70 yards so cost isn't a big deal, we can go with something durable.

The last Home Depot install we had, seams were showing within two years, some wrinkles, and the installers appeared to be MS13 gang members.

A good Berber can't be beaten,. They wear like iron and, if stain resistant, they shed dirt like a teflon fry pan. You'll be sick of it before it wears out. Your wife will hate it because she can't tell you that it needs to be replaced.

We pulled the carpet out of the living room and master bedroom and went back with wood for almost the same price.

I use a local shop & have for years.

Even if it costs a little more I like that the money goes right back into the local economy.

Good friend of mine used to install for Lowes, his stories would make your hair curl.

Yep, with our two dogs, we are leaning heavily towards a berber, some kind of brown so it will start out the same color as it will end up

There are many items, appliances come to mind, that certain models are only available through Lowes, HD, etc. Hard to compare that way. I wouldn't be surprised that carpet is that way.

Gawd. I wish. We had some in a place we just moved into that meets this description. If not for pet stains, it would be fine after 20 years. I decided to repeat & ended up at HD. They had the best selection for some reason. It has only been down a year and already has loops coming up & other crap. The installers were professional, but only did a passable job 'cause they were in such a hurry. Worst part is I had to talk my wife into the Berber.

BC of this, I went with a local shop I use for rentals next time. Did a half-a$$ed job even making them come back to put in transitions they left out etc. Problem is that so many have gone out of business there is not much competition. What happened to NY Carpet World?! LOL. At least you got a deal.

I had to rule out berber ... I have two Border Collies ... you give them a thread to pull on and it's all over. Plus we use beater bar vacuums that if they catch one of the threads they'll wind it up right into the machine.

I had to laugh at the mental picture that brought to mind.

We had a local shop put down Berber in two rooms in '98. Still down and looks good. The same outfit put down some other type, I believe it's called Saxony, at the same time. It's worn well, but had to be stretched twice within 5-years and really needs to be stretched again. I wanted to go with hardwood and area rugs but my wife insisted on wall-to-wall. It wasn't long before she regretted that decision but it was too late.

Once you put wall-to-wall down, you're stuck with it unless you want to spend a lot more money.
