The parts that wear on cylinder heads are:
1. Valve seats 2. Valve seals 3. Deck surface sometimes warps or takes a permanent deformation 4. Valve springs 5. Valves wear out also, stems need sgrinding, exhaust valves burn, etc. 6. Valve guides wear Rebuilding would entail repairing or replacing worn parts. A performance rebuild could entail many things depending on your performance goals. If going to a larger lift camshaft, longer valves and taller valve springs may be required. An engine is an air pump and the more air it moves the more power potential. Certain valve seat angles increase air flow, this would have a performance increase. Modifying a head to accept a larger size valve may also increase air flow potential depending on your specific needs. Head porting reduces the restriction in the intake and exhaust ports and would increase flow potential, or power potential. Cylinder head porting is a science and done incorrectly can have less than desireable results. Done correctly can enhance large power increases. This is just a very basic answer but I hope it will give you some insight. Tim C 65 LeMans 11.06@121

Thunder,
What is porting of the combustion chamber or porting the intake? The word porting refers to enlarging or re-shaping the intake or exhaust ports of a cylinder head. Porting is also done to intake manifolds for the same reason. Then there is port matching of an intake manifold. This is just matching the intake ports of the manifold to the intake port of the head. I have never heard of porting a combustion chamber as it is not a port but a chamber. Sometimes an experienced engine builder will do some reshaping of the combustion chamber in an attempt to improve combustion efficiency Tim C 65 LeMans 11.06@121
