Solid or Hydraulic?

Daily driver , street/track, manual or power brakes, auto or stick, tire size, rear ratio, etc.....these are all important factors to take into effect.

Has anything else been done to the motor?

Cannot make any kind of suggestion without more info.

It's funny that it seems that every beginner hot rodder wants to put in a cam for that magic power enhancer. Drop in a 1/2 race cam and you got a hot rod. I'm not attacking you because I did the same thing, most of us started out with the same idea. When making a street rod the first thing you need to do is plan out what you really want out of the car. Then make a plan and save your money. Then do a whole car upgrade, even if it is done in stages at least if you have a well planned out combo you won't be wasting your time and money. How much are you willing to spend? How fast do you want to go? Daily driver? Street racer? Street/strip? Is this a transportation car or a pleasure car? You need to think about things like brakes, wheels and tires, suspension, cylinder head air flow, compression ratio, rear gear, transmission, torque converter, exhaust system, intake manifold, carb, ignition, fuel delivery system, etc. Will the bottom end hold up to your increased power level? Just throwing in a cam won't get you much. If you think with the end in mind there is lots of help on this board to guide you along the way

Try to list every spec on your car, all the things that Tim listed and then some. Then tell us what you want out of it, what kind of driving you will do and what kind of performance you are looking for. Every cam maker will have you list everything that you could possibly think of (and some you would never think of) about your car in order to choose a cam properly. Just stick a Ram Air IV cam in it. After all, that's Pontiac's "miracle cam", guaranteed to make a race engine out of whatever you use it in.
