My book says that XH was a big car motor for '67 and '68.

Give me a thumbs up, tell me "Nice Car!", but for god's sake, don't call it an Impala.

To start with :You should have more numbers and letters on your block than you have sent in. The first group is going to be the serial # which will also have the year stamped within the number, it is located on the front Right side of the Block just below the area that the water pump bolts on . That is in the same area that you located the XH code. The first # should be a 2, this will stand for a Pontiac motor, the next two digits will be the year. The 9790071 Number should be the block casting number just behind the casting #8 cylinder on Rt. side of block. 9790071 crosses over to a 1969 400Cid motor. The XH code should be a 400/336 Hp . Send in your serial # Valley Numbers(located by the lifters) and head numbers if you are still not sure, but from what you have posted I think my info is correct on the Year and Motor size. Any more questions feel free to ask on line or E- Me.

The block is probably a 1969.

The prodution #0654489 is called the Motor Unit Number,it's right above the XH.
69 and later engines had 7 digits, which this has.

The block 9790071 shows it's a 1968 or 1969.

There should be a cast date code back by the distributor beginning with a letter then 3 or 4 numbers. This will tell for sure when it was cast.

What is the date code at the back of the block, near the distributer mounting pad?

Thanks for all the info. My next question is this can I install 67 exhaust manifolds on a 69 400 motor with 62 heads.I'd like to keep most of the car as much to the year as possible.

Re; 67 Exhaust manifolds... The manifolds will work with the motor, but have you considered a nice set of free flowing headers to let the motor breath?
