Weird 70 mirrors
Can anyone look at the side mirrors on this 70 and see if you can tell me what they are? I have a 70 that have the exact same mirrors. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ponti...item1c0e6ca306
Are they factory?

Those look like the el cheapo mirrors that you'd find at discount stores like 3D, Danners etc automotive depts in the late 70's.

Thanks for the info guys. I figured they were aftermarket. Just kind of freaked me out seeing the exact same ones on that 70 on E-bay.
Whats weird is my 70 is silver that was painted over the original Palisade Green. I scratched some of the paint off the mirror and underneath was Palisade Green.

so... Fact or Opinion... are his (& my) mirrors factory or aftermarket? I think a reply should be based on fact... give some proof of what your saying not just cause you've not seen em before... quote a site or Pontiac Rep or something besides... "no they are aftermarket"... I'm finding a little hard to believe (call me bias) that two cars have similar style mirrors & they are "aftermarket"... I wouldn't think mirrors would be a big thing to mod on a muscle car...
Although I will say I haven't seen my mirrors in reproduction anywhere or on (or in) a parts site or catalog. So come'on guy respond with some accuracy... not knocking anyone, just like to have the facts... |

Logun, look at your mirrors and compare them to what is on the other car: Totally different...Yours are a 2 piece with the actual mirror that moves while on the others, the whole casing is what moves and IIRC they were made of plastic where GMs were cast metal...Yours are GM his are aftermarket (this from over 25 years of having collected GTO parts)...Those GM originals were available as of 1971 on Lemans/GTOs....

Kmart used to sell this kind of mirror. They are cheap looking.

They look like the same mirrors I took off my GT-37. Look very similar to FORD mirrors as a buddy with a 70 Torino Cobra was interested in them as his mirrors are damaged. When I took mine off I didn't see the FORD oval on the underside which tells me they are aftermarket. (mine are for sale if anyone is interested)
The mirrors on the Lux LeMans are the correct GM factory mirrors used on A-body's in 71 and 72, along with later years like 73+ and F-body cars

Logun, you have the 'Sport' mirrors, exactly like mine.
Robz, do you know if the sport mirrors were part of the GTO package? Most 71-72 have them, some don't. Just wondering why some have the standard chromed type mirrors. |

MescaBug, I have limited knowledge on the 71-72 models, but believe the color matched sport mirrors were an option...Std was chrome non-remote...

You are correct. My 71 GTO came with the Std non remote chrome mirror. I switch to the sport mirrors because they look so good.

They are "sport Mirrors " that were on 71 and beyond Pontiac and GM vehicles......FYI
I need a remote mirror for my 70 and wanted to go to the sport mirrors I found one on a 78 Chevette in a bone yard and it was exactly the same

The sport mirrors are similar on several different GM models from the early 70's thru the mid 80's. The main difference in them is the length of the base & the angle where it attaches to the door. Some will have mounting studs built into them instead of the single screw/bracket set up like the "A" & "F" body cars had.
