Here is a picture of the car at the Cobble Ridge Concours d’ elegance in Owen Sound Ontario, in September 2015. The car took second place in the Preservation class. The Goodyear tires on the car in this picture were not on the car when Keith got it, so Reg must have kept them.

Mike,
Pretty much everything under the hood (engine wise) is correct and original to the car, with the exception of the block. I recently purchased a correctly coded WC block which is already at the machine shop. I'll be pulling the engine (in the car) sometime in the next few weeks and sending it to the machinist to use the parts (crank/heads/intake/tin/etc) for the engine build. I'm not going to install the exhaust until the engine goes back in, so it will probably be 6-8 weeks (if all goes well) before I can give you any feedback regarding fitment, sound, etc.... |

Yes, this was the one in Sacramento, so I was able to pick it up as opposed to having to ship it.

The engine is back from the machine shop. I had it rebuilt using the date-code-correct WC block I bought. It's bored .060 over and the stock crank cleaned up at 10/10. I installed new forged rods and pistons, zero decked the block, and used a custom grind cam (Clay Smith Cams), complete valve job with all new valves, etc... The compression ratio is right at 9 to 1.

Transmission
When I bought the car, it had the original M22 trans in it, as indicated by the matching VIN on the case. However, I was told that Wayne (the original owner) was running a Liberty racing transmission when he was racing the car. Therefore, I assumed the M22 was in good shape since it had not been in the car when it was raced. The trans also shifted well, so I figured it was in good shape.
I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary when I pulled the engine and trans, but a few days later I glanced at the trans and noticed it had a course spline input shaft with two groves in it, indicating it was an M20 wide ratio trans. I called Wayne and told him about the input shaft and he said he had broken "two or three of those" before switching over to the Liberty trans. BUMMER! So, off to the rebuilder it went. Once it was torn down we found it had an M20 gear set in it, and the gears were all in poor condition, so I went ahead and had the trans rebuilt with all new gears, including the correct fine-spline input shaft. Since the M22 gear sets are available in close ratio or wide ratio, I elected to use the wide ratio gears. I think that will be better suited for how I plan to use the car. |

Chris,
That is going to be a runner! What are the cam specs if you wouldn't mind sharing. Too bad about the M-20 guts, but at least you have the original numbers housing. Are you going to the AutoGear 2.98 1st gear? That is a such a great TA. Dennis |

This just goes to show;
When you stop regularly coming her for a while, you miss out on some great threads! A (very) belated congratulations on the Trans Am! It's great to see that this car is being so well taken care of! How did the car drive with the M20?

Dennis,
It's a 2.54 first gear. I'll have to get you the cam specs later, I don't have the cam card with me at the moment. |

Chris, That 2.54 will work beautifully with your 9.0: to 1 455HO. They even work great with a 3.08 rear end, but even better with your 3.42's.

Dennis,
Here is the cam card. When I made my decision to go with the wide ratio trans gears I did it with the thought that I might eventually change the rear gears from the original 3.42's that are in it now, to 3.08's. Obviously the 3.42's are fun around town, but I plan on driving and enjoying this car, so I foresee plenty of freeway driving. Therefore, I think the 3.08's will be better suited for how I plan on using the car. Chris |

Well the engine is back in the car and running. I started it up and broke in the cam this morning. I had a few minor glitches (coolant leak at the heater core and a small fuel leak), but nothing too serious. I'm looking forward to getting it out on the road again.
As with my previous builds, this is not a "restoration." The car is in very nice shape considering it's age, and it has obviously been well cared for, and therefore my intention was to make it look like what it really is, a well preserved car with 17,000 original miles on it. Obviously I painted the engine, but everything else under the hood was just cleaned and degreased (I used hot water and Dawn dishwashing soap). I had to resist the temptation to sandblast and paint all the brackets, clips, bolts, etc., but my hope is that the engine paint will eventually "burn in" and the car will just look like a nice clean used car. Chris,
With that cam that is an easy 425 hp and 525 lbft torque motor. You'll love it with the 3.08 rear gear and the 2.54 first gear (7.823 multiplication vs. the M-21/3.42's 7.524). It's looking great! Dennis |

Don't sell your work short - that Castillian Bronze Formula was much more of a restoration than justifies the term in most people's eyes!
Congrats on getting the T/A back into a running state so quickly. I'm looking forward to the drive report-
