Default Mechanical fuel pump gaskets ?

Looking at replacing my 65’s fuel pump.

Will be a first for me.

As I shop for a pump, most are shown with (2) two gaskets.

Does it take both gaskets to properly mount it ?

The pump is driven by a eccentric off of the cam so there will be a point in the crank rotation where the pump will be easier to install because of less pressure being put on the pump arm.

I believe that position is #1 tdc when the plug fires. The 2 gaskets are for if you have a plastic insulator between the pump and timing cover.

I have never seen a plastic insulator used on a Pontiac fuel pump. How thick are they? Are they readily available?, Do they actually help with vapor lock by reducing fuel temperature? Interesting . Were they ever installed OE?

You are probably correct Mike, I know I've seen them on something, that's the only reason I could see for 2 gaskets being included.

I hope I'm right on the eccentric position, if not I will go stand in the corner for the rest of the day

Just turn the motor over with a 15/16” socket on the balancer bolt and stop when the pump sits almost flat on the sealing surface.

Did this a couple weeks ago, with little to no tension on the actuating arm the pump bolted right up easy as can be. I did end up reclocking the pump after the engine was in the car. It wasn’t easy to tell if the inlet fittings would interfere with the steering box or not.

My Carter M6907 pump only came with one gasket but it did come with 2 small sleeves to enable you to use the pump with 5/16” fasteners as well as 3/8” which I used.

Never ever heard of using an insulator between the pump and timing cover, you’d have to think that a completely different pump body casting would be required with a different flange height to accommodate any spacer.

Just remember to apply sealant to the one bolt that does not enter a dead-end hole.
