Skip, I'll take 71 and humid over 40's and soggy. It's nothing but a big mud-hole around here, the snow melted and the ground thawed out. I wanted to get the Road King out today but the driveway is too soft and muddy......Cliff

Well we set a new high yesterday of 81! Was a very nice day, humidity burned off later. Was sweating out in the garage tearing down the previous motor.
Was in the low 30s just 2 weeks ago.

Cliff,

Can you describe the range of Total Advances tried (like how low a Total ADV can you go without loss of HP/TQ?, and can you describe the onset of PING noticed when the power was peaked?

I assume you used 93-94Octane Fuel. Is that correct>? HIS

HIS, we use 89 octane in this particular engine for all testing, dyno and track runs. We've moved the timing a couple of times off of our 30 degree total setting and power either doesn't change, or falls off some. We tried a range of 28 to 34 degrees during the dyno testing the past couple of weeks, and also increased fuel octane a tad by adding about 20 percent 108 octane to our 89 octane fuel. The engine simply makes it's best power right at 30 degrees BTDC. Adding the race gas showed no improvements and increasing octane at the track has little if any impact of ET or MPH, it usually runs the same or slows just a tad.

During the past 4 years, I've heard the engine ping once, when we tried to test a stock Performer intake on it. When torn down for freshening up, all bearings were in perfect shape, not the first hint of detonation.

We saw the same thing back when we ran the 6X-4 heads, it likes/wants 30 degrees BTDC total timing. We bring it all in by about 2800rpm's. Since our converter stalls just above that rpm, the spark curve itself isn't a factor in track performance.

I have on a few occassions played around with the spark curve and adding some additional timing via the vacuum advance, ranging from about 10 to 20 degree's, hooked to either a ported or manifold source. It really doesn't make any difference in throttle response, fuel milage or power anyplace. We choose to use a ported source to the advance as the engine idles fine in and out of gear and add about 10 degrees of additional timing at cruise. The engine idles OK using a manifold source to the advance, but going beyond about 20 degrees timing induces a slight "skip" or miss into the engine. Probably due to the high compression ratio and small cam specs, it simply doesn't want or need that much timing at idle for best efficiency......Cliff

Cliff can you post the dyno curves graphs of all three cams ?
I think that would be interesting to see side by side.

89 Octane & 30 degrees Total is a value we all could aspire towards.
What were the 60foots when using 30deg & 89Octane?

Well done. HIS

HIS, earlier this year with a fresh set of MT ET Drag Radials all runs netted 1.65-1.67 60' times and ran 11.64 to about 11.80 depending on weather conditions. Later in the year, in much hotter weather, 60' times slowed to around 1.69-1.71, and the car slowed into the 11.80's to 11.90's. Even though we slowed up a couple of tenths, we ran MORE mph? When we pulled the engine down for freshening up, there was quite a bit of slack in the timing chain, everything else was fine.

I don't have the graphs from all 3 cams, just the dyno sheets.....Cliff
