Default What engine oil does everyone use for ZDDP?

I am concerned about the lack of ZDDP (zinc) in the newer motor oils. I have heard that a lack of ZDDP can potentially cause damage in engines designed to run with it. I have learned that some people are running diesel oil in older cars because there is still ZDDP in these oils. Is anybody here doing this? And if so, what brand and viscosity is recommended?

My '72 GTO has an unmodified 400 engine, and I think the oil spec is SAE30.

I have had good luck using the Lucas zinc-plus additive.

I run 10w40 Brad Penn in the GTO and 0w40 Mobil 1 in the Camaro. Both have enough ZDDP in the oil so no additives are needed. Mobil 1 15w50 also has plenty of ZDDP - I just didn't want to run that heavy an oil in the GTO as I do occasionally drive the car in colder temps.

I've been running diesel-spec Rotella in my '67 (stock engine) for the past 10 years or so without issue. I understand even the diesel spec stuff is getting rid of the ZDDP, though. I also add a bottle of MOA additive from BG. The stock spec oil is 10w30 for these engines, which I recommend. The Rotella is typically 15w-40, which is a bit thick, but out where I am, it's very hot most of the time, so I'm ok with it. The main thing to avoid is racing oil of any kind, as it lacks the additives necessary to protect your engine under daily driving conditions.

I was about to ask the same question.

Right now Im running off the shelf oil with a zddp additive, but Im looking for an oil that doesn't need an additive.

Delo 15W40 and nothing else since 2001-2002 or so. No problems and tens of thousands of miles on many engines.

Did use Mobil1 with a bottle of additive. Now I use Mobil1 for high mileage engines which Mobils website shows has more ZDDP than regular Mobil1.

there is an additive product approved by Continental. Lycoming and the FAA for use in aircraft engines. its runs about 8-11 bucks for a bottle. it has all the good stuff in it. those engines cost beteen 20-60 thousand dollars each so its not snake oil. Aircaft spruce sells it.

dont use too much of any additive or it will cause corrosion of some brass and parts. Many who build antique motorcycles learned this the hard way
