front brake overhaul 1979 trans am
Hey gang, I'm replacing the master cylinder, booster, lines, hoses and calipers on the '79.
It came FACTORY with the 9" booster. I am having trouble finding the 9" booster with master cylinder sold as complete unit. There is no shortage of the complete 11" booster/master cylinder assemblies. The added advantage of the 9" booster over the 11", is tall valve covers can be used without interference. Also, if I have to buy everything separately, what size piston in the master cylinder would be correct for this car. I see a 1" and a 1.25" piston options for the master cylinder. I haven't taken everything apart yet but I want to collect everything so I'll be ready when i do. Thanks!

Larry the 9" is only with the 4 wheel disc set up. I know they had a rebuilt for the 81 because maybe 10 years ago I put one on the 81.
Probably will need to get them separate. It will be a cast iron 1 1/8" same as the disc drum in size but should not have a residual pressure in the rear line like they do. The '81s used a Quick Take Up MC that has a larger register as well as a slightly different booster to fit that. You could probably use the smaller iron MC on it as they have the same stud spacing. I'd go SS flex lines instead of the rubber unless you want the factory look. They do not stretch as much with pressure so a little better pedal feel in theory. The booster stud nuts are a pain to get to. Probably 15mm and one of those flexible gear ratchet box ends as there is very little room to get to them. I have one if you need to borrow it. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...+cylinder,1836 Here is master. Booster https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...e+booster,1884

Yes, rockauto is a good source for the booster and master but the booster will not be plated. You could always get your original rebuilt and re plated by Booster dewey, he's expensive but does a nice job.

The only problem using Rock Auto is sending parts back that were shipped wrong, or you find out you ordered the wrong part(s). Several guys I know here have ordered from them and had a hell of a time trying to get the correct parts or their money back. Rock Auto is a owned by A1 Auto. The same outfit that now owns Pep Boys. The parts store I hang out at is stuck with AI as they have everything tied up here for getting auto parts. They're trying to monopolized the whole East Coast. Next will be Auto Zone and Advance in their conquest. I wouldn't buy from Rock Auto if I was paid to.
And they're SOBs to deal with. If you own your own parts store they'll do anything and everything to take over. There's several AP stores here they told the owners they'd buy them out or put them out of business. And they did. They cut them off from buying parts from anyone. I'm serious, it's all true, no joke about it.
