I have a 288/296 in my motor and I think it goes pretty dam well. I should br in the 12's next year when I get better tires. I also would go with a stall and rhodes lifters. I think when I make those improvements I predict I will make around 12.7 in the 1/4

A friend with a 428, stock #12 heads, cast iron intake, swap meet headers in a 70 TA ran 12.70-12.80s regularly using the UD 288/296.

I've gotten a best of 12.60 @ 109 mph so far with a hydraulic 288/296 in my 462, 4 sp. combo, and there's more in her. I've heard of others doing much better. I like the cam quite a bit. I'm able to run power brakes too.

I noticed some of you guys with the 288/296 cams have the solid unit. Mine is the hydrolic one. How much does that cost me ET wise?

"Back in the olden days" I ran an HC-03 in a 400 in my 64 GTO. It had a 66 tri-power, 4.33 gears, M-22 4-speed and 1 3/4" headers. It ran 12.20 at 114.

Frankly you don't provide enough info for which cam will best fit your application. Weight of vehicle, intended usage, stall, gears, short block components, transmission, carb, heads, compression, etc etc all are factored into which cam to select.
I have done two different versions of my HO 28 in my Bonne and my current cam is a CompCam 280h with ported #16's and 10.75 to 1 forged etc. It is a nice rumbler on idle not bad in low to mid but wakes up nicely mid to 5,800.

The 288/296 I'm talking about is their hydraulic not the solid. The solid is more agressive @ 0.050 than the hydraulic.

Harold is at extension 135 at Lunati for Ultradyne cams now. Just got a 296/304 hydraulic on the way myself on a 112 lobe sep.

Goathead is running low 12s with his now.

I ran the HC-03 cam for years. 455 +60, 197 HO Round Port heads, 3.31 gears, 26 x 10 x 15 slick, TH400, Q-jet, Performer RPM, HO Racing Tri Y Headers. This was in my '65 GTO that weighs about 3900 pounds with me in it. At Carlsbad Raceway in Carlsbad, CA the car ran 12.50's at 106-107 MPH. The cam had great idle and vacuume. I would recommend it.

BTW, it is my understanding that Ken Crocie now has a HC-03C cam that is an improvement.

Ron

Pontiac RAIV 308/320... 231 240.... .470 .470 114 LSA

Both with 1.5 ratio rockers.Pretty similar huh? Did Pontiac know what they were doing 35 years ago or what?

Gonzo, The seat duration of the RAIV is what hinders it some especially in a 400. Same duration @ 0.050 but a bunch more seat duration and overlap. Most of the old factory cams for Pontiac as well as Chevy had slower ramps for easier loads on valvetrain.

Were not the factory grinds advertised at something like .001-.002" tappet rise whereas most aftrmarket grinds use .006"?

who is your daddy?

I agree Skip....todays profiles are definitely enhanced.

UD 288/296 72 degrees overlap
RAIV 308/320 86 degrees overlap..or thereabouts

As a side note, to find out overlap:

Add the intake and exhaust adv durations
Divide the results by 4
Subtract the LSA
Multiply the results by 2

= overlap

RAIV Don't leave home without it.

I don't know the specs of the new HC-03. I hope Ken Crocie will read this and respond. I will also try to get ahold of him and make a reply.
