I have a 400ci totaly stock except for headers.I had the distributer and carb rebuilt. I have twice had a backfire from under the valley pan.The smoke that comes after the backfire looks like the motor blew. The first time it wouldnt start afterword. The second time it started right up. The first time after the backfire I poped the hood and was looking and it backfired again from between the valley pan and block and fire blew out from there. Any ideas???? Anything would help. Thanks,Troy

T-Roy,

Happened to me 40 yrs ago on a 392 Chrysler hemi. I think the fuel pump diaphram is ruptured which now delivers raw gas into the crankcase. I kept cranking the hemi until I got a huge backfire which "ported" the valley cover between the attachment bolts and covered me with 10 yrs of accumulated sludge.
