Feedback on new rim look
Well the champ has set the bar high with his wheels. I have been intrigued by the dog dish old school look. I happened to have a full size spare so experimenting with look with my rally I. Back wheel is current. Front wheel is my test. Painted rim flat back and lost the trim ring. Ties with interior and top. Ignore white letters. I would use black walls.
Which wheel do u prefer? My next iteration I may try to paint a red line around the edge like champ. I think the faux redline tire is super cool. |

I'm a fan of dog dishes, but I'm less a fan of what you have on the front of your car. Is that a GM truck wheel?

I don't think either one looks good, but the rear is better.
Try taking the top down. Your black to paint ratio will be better.

Just go for the gloss black 17s with the painted redlines, you know you want them. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
My Tempest back in 1999 with 17x8s all around. The 17” wheels work best because the painted redline ends up very close to the same place it would be on a 14” redline tire, on a 15” wheel not so much.

Thanks for thoughts guys. B-man and German those look good. I just spent a small fortune on a tko 600 and some hiccups, so I was trying to be on the cheap for now painting my existing 15 inch rally I’s.
Two comments I’ll put forth - I kind of feel like if I am going to buy new rims, I wish they were aluminum to knock off some weight, but I don’t believe they make an aluminum rally I. The second is if I go with a 17x8, without lowering suspension some (Not ready to take that on), will the car appear to high? I’ll also mention That I like a good amount of sidewall, so low profile tires are not that interesting for me... |

You’re going to want to do at least a moderate lowering for the right look with 17x8s, pretty easily accomplished with relatively inexpensive lowering springs. An inch and a half drop should get you there.

You maintain the same ride height and outer tire diameter by using a lower profile tire. If you didn't maintain the same outer tire diameter, not only would your ride height increase, but your speedometer would also become inaccurate.
I like a good amount of sidewall on these cars, too. There's no doubt that 17s handle better and there are many more tire options available for 17" wheels compared to 14" and 15" wheels, but 17s are not for everybody. Only way I'd put 17s on my car is if I went with what b-man did, but doing so is pretty costly.

Just want to point out that a my decision to go with 17's was due to b-man's Tempest with 17's that he had posted years ago. I liked what he did and copied him...
My 17" tire diameters are very close to the 235/60/15 front and 255/60/60 rears that I ran previously. Current sizes are 215/55/17 front and 245/50/17 rear. Car is lowered up front with Koni Coilovers. Rear has a set of custom made springs made by Coil Springs Specialties back in 1995 which gave me a .75" lift over the "correct" convertible rear springs from our host that I originally installed in 1994. I didn't like the tail end of my convertible being lower than the front as the factory had them back in the day. I'm sure that my 25 year old custom springs have settled somewhat at this time. |

As to the look of the rally wheel in flat black...
I'd try a gloss or semi gloss black, it I wanted the rim to be black. I don't think that flat black looks good. |

Appreciate the thoughts guys. I hear u on the geometry/math. Thanks for those pics again champ. If you had asked me if I’d like a 55 profile on my car I’d say no- but I am realizing that with the black rim it helps a lot to disguise the low profile look as u don’t see where the rim stops and the tire starts. Someone here once described a low profile set up as wagon wheels wrapped in rubber bands, which I do subscribe too, but I don’t get that with your setup at all. Again that imitation saying of flattery...
An interesting thing I learned here today is why the previous owner had 70’s up front and 60,s out back and now I know - seems that he was trying to level the incongruent height of a convertible that u mention. I’ll keep toying with the idea and keep folks apprised. With the car back together after some time and some good upgrades in the books, I suspect I will need new tires in short order here. |

Well here it is. I’m happy. Diamond back redline 215/70 and 255/60. Existing 15 inch Rally 1 painted black, delete trim ring, keep center cap.
I like black top and/or interior keying off black wheel. More so than painting wheel Same color as body, which is what I Had before below too |

You made right choice, the car looks fantastic. The wheels and tires go well with the black top.
