Default 1970 Trunk Harness

I just received a new tail lamp harness from American Autowire and noticed it was supplied with black lamp sockets. My originals are an off-white/cream color.
I called them and they say their prints call for black sockets. I then called M&H, and they say they use black also.
I think they can add my originals to the new harness, but I might just refurbish the original.
I'm just curious what color you guys are seeing on yours....

I used the harness out of an early car, it was white. I think my other two later 70's had black sockets. It seems there might have been a change at some point.

White. I had the same issue with the alternator connector -- the original is grey, theirs is white. They said a change in color has to do with the grade of plastic.

You can also pop the contacts out -- see pic -- and switch them, if they're the same. See pic. The screw driver points to the tab you have to push out of the way from the lamp side to pull the contact out.

White here - if you need them I could probably pull it and send them to you.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like the white sockets are pretty common on 70's.
For the record my car was built April '70 @ Norwood.

Great info... I think I'll give this a try. Thanks.

Thanks for that offer, but I still have my old sockets and they look pretty decent.

Reviving an old thread
Has anyone been able to source the white sockets? I've order some samples from various vendors over the last few months and none are close
Even the used sets on eBay have black sockets so guessing they had a short run before switching over in 70-71
Thanks for the help

Thanks Jon, I'll try that number
I was working off of 8914822 from the Pontiac parts manual

Unfortunately, socket 8914823 or 8914822 isn't close to what's on the car. First pic is from Bruce's earlier post with the square bottom, which is also on my harness
Any idea what that part number is?

hmm;
well the sockets on this 1970 Lemans are the second type - not the square bottom;
I'm guessing that's a hard pass for you

Cool

I may have a second harness with the sockets you need, I am looking for my original harness and my extra one, both are white. I started my 70 TA restoration, again, so I have a few boxes to look through.

I will keep you posted.

no problem.

At least we know that Oshawa built cars, assembled in October 1969 had the wrong lamp sockets for you.
