What are original radios worth?
What should one pay for 1970 Delco radios? AM, AM/FM. Working. Not working.

I can't say for a '70 specifically, but I've seen the AM's go for 25 to maybe 100 bucks for good working order. I'd double or maybe on the outside triple for FM.

AM-FM's working are around $325.00 to $350.00, working Stereo's are alot more.AM radio's are around $20.00 to $75.00 for a working unit.... At least that's what I was selling them for when I had one.....

Early 70s with the Delco script are about the same. SD73 is correct on price. $25 or so for a rough one. $100+ for a complete working AM. Nice complete working AM/FMs will bring $200+. AM/FM stereos with the red dot will bring a little more, $250+. These prices were what I was seeing a few years ago when I was hunting one down.

I see them on Ebay all the time. They almost always sell unless there’s a crazy reserve. You should be able to get a good idea of what you’ll pay for the one you need. I bought one on ebay and it turned out to have some major problems. I sent it out for repair and the guy said it was too far gone but he cut me a great deal for one he had on hand. He actually has many old Pontiac radios and 8-track players. You should contact him and ask him what he has and get a price. He does a GREAT restoration on these old radios too.
His name is Jim and he’s a member here at PY. Here’s an old thread with some pictures of my radio and his contact info. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...51#post3651851 Hope this helps, Doug |

Delco Red Dot Stereo ($300-$400 totally cleaned & restored).
Delco 8-Track ($250-$300 same as above). Be sure and get the special wiring harness ($35-$40) that connects the radio to the 8-Track. Don't forget that these original radios require 10 ohm speakers. They might survive with a pair of 8 ohm for a while kept at low output, but if you try to get by with 4 or 6 ohm you will definitely ruin your radio. If your like me you might want to do a little reading up on old radios before you contact any of these guys. Please forgive me if you already have a PHD in electronics, never mind....my bad! If you don't, here's a few links http://www.marktaw.com/recording/Ele...dSpeakers.html http://www.turnswitch.com/ http://www.wonderbarman.com/ http://www.wardsclassiccarradiorepair.com/ If your lucky the guy you buy from is an experienced qualified service tech and you don't have to do anything but hook it up and play it. I still have the seller contacts where I bought my stuff off ebay if you want them. Not sure he is still in the business. Some of these guys have retired and have sold off their equipment. Good luck. Eddie

If I hadn't already had $700 or $800 invested in going back stock...that's what I would have done. Here's an example, several places sell these. Click link below, scroll down to 70 1/2 - 77 Firebird. http://www.radiosforoldcars.com/newradio0F.htm Eddie

Wow...I am amazed. I read some other post about good radio people and it happens that the guy I bought all my stuff from is the guy he bought his stuff from, AND... is a member here. That makes me feel even better that I did business with a fellow Pontiac Man. I highly recommend this guy. My radio looks and plays beautiful. Here's a link to that post here on the forum. Just scroll back to the top when you land on this post.

I've got a lead on an AM from a 70 Firebird and an AM/FM from a B-body. The guy says the AM/FM unit works. He's not sure about the AM. He wants $100 for the former.
My parts catalog shows Firebird radios to be 988832 for AM, 988830 for FM and 988831 for Stereo. Those currently on ebay -- listed as for early birds -- and recently sold, all have 73***** or 79***** numbers ...? Were the same radios used in the other models? I don't yet know what numbers he has. Thanks for the help. |

Think the 9xxx numbers are for 1970 models only.

This may shed some light on how to determine (by the numbers) what model radio is correct for your car. Here are some links below that show you how to decipher what year radio by the service model number.
Just remember 1st digit is "year", the 2nd digit is Division, "2" for Pontiac Division, and so on. This one is for Chevelle guys, but it works fine for information http://www.chevelles.com/radiotech/69_72tags.html This one is a very good source for information. Scroll down nearly to the bottom of the page or until you get to the 1968 radio model numbers. you'll see the new number system Delco adopted. That's the system that applys to our cars. http://www.wonderbarman.com/codes.html Eddie

Interesting. I thought I'd try to decode my "original" am radio. But my code is 80BPB1. So the 8 probably means 78.. but 0 what car line is 0? Or could that mean replacement radio? B car style which is the default. PB pushbutton AM thats right. And series 1.
I guess the most confusing thing is the 0 for which division. Anybody know anything about that? |

Thanks, this was supposed to be for a 74 formula. Would think it odd for someone to put a newer am style radio in a non restored car.

'77-8 got a different coding as they made the radios more division generic.
8, model year 0, all divisions B, full size PB, push button (AM) 1, revision Was there cutting to install that radio? Maybe the width between the knobs were the same, but the face should have been bigger. |

The hole's completly hacked at this point. Radio was just stuck in the hole. Looks like that was the proper decoding for it. Interesting.
Thankyou for the help. Brandon. |
