Vacuum guage/Tach on 64 cat
Just looking fo rinfo on the vacuum and tach guages for a 64 Catalina. I have a 64 Catalina convertible and it came (not at all likely to be original) vacuum guage mounted to the left side of the dash (unfortunately not with the mounting plate). I was wondering if it was possible to get a 64 with a vacuum guage without a console as the only place I remember seeing them mounted is on the console. This was a 3 on the tree setup, so would it most likely have come with a tach in that location? Did all manual cars have a tach or vacuum guage? did the guages ever get mounted in other locations besides the left side of the dash or on the console? Thanks in advance

From my understanding, in '64, you needed an auto trans to get a vacuum gauge. I've never seen one mounted in that area, as I've always seen them mounted on a console, but that doesn't mean you couldn't get a vacuum gauge put there. Tach was always mounted on the dash.
Can anyone else shed some light on this? -r-

My understanding (while not infallible) is the same as yours, Ron:
for '63/64 - automatic cars got the vacuum gage standard on the console; tach was available as an option or accessory up on the dash. Stick cars got the tach on the console, I believe. K

But my car is a bench seat car and has the "3 on the tree" setup. I assume if it did come from the cactory with a tach it would have had it mounted on the side of the dash. Can anyone confirm this. I know the 3 speeds are rare but hopefully someone out there can answer this.
Did the bench seat stick cars have the tach mounted on the dash? I think I am going to mount mine there anyway as I know it was an option, and I may just "add" the vacuum guage to the hump on the floor if it looks good there. Apparently in the early 60's (I think 61 or 62) you could have one mounted that way. I even found a bracket for this that raised it up and allowed the carpet to be tucked into it. Can someone confirm the year this was done? Pics would be awesome if you have em too. |

I know this is old but the original off the road 45 years 64 Grand Prix 4 speed car I just picked up , seems to be a STD 389-4v car with STD open 3.42 rear but had BOTH the OEM vacuum gage on the console plate and a dash mounted OEM tach....
