A legend of Aviation
455firebird1969's post of the P-51 reminded me of a book I read.

You have to love the story of his escape from Stalag Luft 1. A true American hero!

There are a heck of a lot of great WW2 era pilots books worth reading, many were written LONG ago.
"Thunderbolt" was by Robert Johnson, written in 1958, about his time over Germany flying a P-47. "The First And The Last" was by Adolf Galland, a brilliant German ace who flew Me109's, and at the end of the war, formed the first jet squadron of Me262's. "Black Thursday" by Martin Caidin, all about the Schweinfurt raid that was the costliest of all bomber missions, where B-17's were falling like leaves from a tree, it was a horrible day for the Allies. Greatest ace of all; German ace Eric Hartmann, who amassed 352 victories. He was so feared that the mere appearance of his Me109, with a black tulip on the cowl, caused entire squadrons of Russian fighters to run.
