Default 70 Lemans Parking lights

Why do some 70 Lemans have a clear front lens with an amber side and others have amber front and side? My 70 Sport has clear front and the Sport I just bought some parts from have amber lenses? Both cars are Sports, what color do Tempest's come with? I don't know if either car has been changed or not. Thanks

my GT is clear...all of the 70s have parted are clear...lemans, tempest, sport, etc.i have never pulled an amber lense off a car

i have seen cars with them...but ive never pulled one off over the last 3 or so decades..so i have no clue what would constitute and amber lense

I've pulled complete amber parking lamps out of several '70 LeMans wagons. Have also pulled ambers out of several well travelled '70 2 doors, but can't vouch for them being original. in used parts circles, really nice examples of either have been tough to find for quite a long time.

pggto - My 70 LeMans (Fremont) is all amber as is my 70 Tempest (Oshawa). I have a few pictures of a Kyle350's Tempest coupe which has clear lenses and another Lemans sedan that has clear.

There doesn't seen to be a pattern unless it has something to do with federal safety regulations. My Lemans and Tempest were built 03-13-70 and 10-06-69 respectively.

Here's another Lemans with clear. I don't know the history of this one.

Found the documentation for this question in my 08/74 MPC.

Early 1970 T37s, Tempests and LeMans used the clear parking lamps. Later production '70 model A-bodies used the amber lamps. Unfortunately there is no mention of the production date or VIN break when the change-over took place.

That makes sense. Mid year engineering change.

Hmmmmm... Haven't seen that trend, been pulling and looking at damaged ones for decades in long time yard cars. Of course, on well travelled drivers, the front valances and parking lights often were damaged and then both often were swapped out, often, with whatever one could get their hands on

I'm not familiar with MPCs. What are those? Are they available online or do you have original documentation?

Thanks!

I posted about this very topic here.

Here's what I know (which isn't much) :
  • My 1970 Tempest Coupe (23327) is a really late build (2nd week of June) out of the Pontiac, MI plant. It has clear lenses up front, amber sides. I have no paper trail on the car, so I have no way of knowing whether or not the lenses are original.
  • My 1970 LeMans Hardtop (23537) is a Arlington, TX build (1st week of November) and is clear/amber. Again, no way to know whether that's original.
  • I know of a 1970 LeMans Coupe (23527) that is almost certainly all original. Baltimore, MD build, shipped February 25, 1970. That car is amber/amber.

I prefer the look of the clear/amber.

Aside from this topic, I'm curious about the other thing I posted about in my thread linked above; steel vs plastic front valances for '70 Tempest/LeMans. Until I recently acquired my Tempest, I didn't know there was such a thing as a plastic valance.

Hey Kyle - "MPC" is short for Pontiac Master Parts Catalog. Reprints should be available, I actually bought 4 of them on CD of various year and model coverages. Sure easier to reference those than to drag out my dusty, ratty old original Pontiac volumes asthey weigh about 10 or 15 pounds each!

Thanks, Lloyd! I'll have to keep an eye out.

Here's a link to "Detroit Iron" website showing the 1970 Pontiac CD. THeir product includes service manual, body manual, parts catalog with illustrations, etc. Great stuff!

Thanks again, Lloyd! Ordered! I put off buying this because I already have all the paper manuals. Searching and printing will be cool, but I didn't realize those parts lists were on there. That put it over the top and made it a must-buy for me!
