Cool It's because...

Helicopters don't really fly-they just vibrate off the ground.

When I was in the Army we flew in Black Hawks quite a bit always in pairs. Most times the pilots would play around with each other cutting on front of each other and horsing around. We always got a kick out of it. That is always on my mind when I hear of crashes.

There's a mathematical formula used to predict your chances of crashing in the rotor wing environment. IIRC, after your 90th flight, you're due. Here's a good site to look at medical aviation mishaps.. http://www.concern-network.org/

Click on the archives for a year to year description. We've had doors fall off in flight, a cabin fire (patient loaded) on final to the roof top, etc, etc.

Helicopters are VERY unforgiving. If you loose lift, you become a brick....a VERY expensive brick.

Someone once said a helicopter is an assembly of parts flying somewhere to crash.

I've flew in I l flown in different small planes and thought it would be cool to have a Piper Super Cub. Always said the only helicopter I am flying in is one that may be coming to rescue me. Had to work under a few relics setting and removing stacks off buildings. Unreal how good those pilots where. The name Carson rings a bell.

I LOVED flying in helicopters when I was in the Army. Way better than flying in a plane. I always loved how smooth it felt riding in a Huey. I had a ride in a Chinook once and I loved that too. They're pretty fast when empty. That said, my very first flight, we had a near miss flying over Fayetteville, NC. Probably came within 100' of another helicopter slightly above us and descending. The pilot simply dropped out of the other guy's way like it was no big deal.

A sign in our office sums it up in a bit different way:

"A helicopter is a mass of fatigued metal circulating around an oil leak"

What helos are you guys flying? I've been around Bell 206s, Agusta 109As, Sikorsky S-58 (yep, the radial engined ones. They leaked oil like sieves) and A-Stars. None of the turbine powered helos leaked oil that bad.

Having logged over 2000 hours in Coast Guard helicopters during a 24 year timeframe, working in corrosion prevention at the Coast Guard's aircraft overhaul facility for five years, and teaching CH-47 maintenance to Army AIT Soldiers for the last year, I've spent the last three decades inside the helicopter culture. Yes, helicopters are unforgiving in the wrong hands, and like any machine, are susceptible to mechanical failure without proper maintenance, however; modern helicopters are very safe machines when operated as designed. The training and discipline required to operate helicopters safely is unending, and if you don't take it very seriously, it will eat your lunch.

I am a retired Army master aviator Chief Warrant Officer 4. Mainly flew AH-1 Cobras and AH-64 Apaches. I flew for over 20 years and never had a major incident. Lost a nose gearbox one night on the #1 engine in Bosina. Brought the power lever for that engine down to flight idle and flew for another 25 minutes to Tuzla main airport which had a long runway and did a roll on landing. Never was in any real danger. Loved every minute of my 20 years of service!

Outstanding, thank you for your service . Most all of the downed helo's I saw were Chinook's of the coral sea, during unwrap.

Comforting to know that if either engine fails, it will drive the other rotor.
