1963 Pontiac Tempest convertible race car
Hey guys,
Does anyone have any info on this 1963 Tempest convertible race car? I was told by the current owner Mike Jones that this car ran in NMCA. Mike also told me he has no videos of car in action or launch pics. Information is appreciated and thinking of purchasing this car. I want to find out as much info that I can before pulling trigger thanks guys!

It's not ringing any bells with me. I ran the full schedule with the NMCA from about 1994 until 2008.
You might check with site member Mike Davis. He might know. K

With it being a full chassis car, what class would it run?

I have been running NMCA since the late 90's and have never seen that car. Not saying it did not race in NMCA just not familiar.

I am a lifetime resident in Ohio and I have never seen that car or heard anything about it. If it was Pontiac powered and ran 8.0 seconds flat, you would think it would be pretty well known in the internet world. Certainly flies under the radar. 63 Tempests make good looking race cars. Does it have a current chassis tag? and for how fast?.

Here is the only info I found that was on the Turbo Buick Forum:
" Quote: A few years later...my friend Jim Kolbrick built a 63' Pontiac Tempest...CONVERTIBLE...with a 640 Merlin motor. It went 7.99 @ 180 with the top down!!!"

OK, good find. That explains why it may be relatively unknown in the Pontiac world. With a Merlin aftermarket engine installed, it would easily go unnoticed in my little world. But that 1 sentence does give some valuable info. If it ran 7.99, it probably has a decent chassis and a valid SFI tag was issued at some point in it's life. What are your plans for it? Just curious. If you buy it, I have some msc. body and trim parts you may be interested in.

I remember seeing that Tempest in one of the Super Chevy Magazines I used to get years ago.
Agree, it did have a BB Chebby Engine. Tom V.

That car was at Norwalk several years ago but I don't recall seeing it run there. Could have.

if you are running anything faster than 850 i would have it certified before you take possesion of it. Theree are alot of cars out there with some pretty shoddy craftsmanship that have expired tags on it. Unless it is so cheap you are willing to make the mods neccessary if it fails to get a 750 cert. Is it mild steel? they are only good for a 750 i believe
