Toyota Sienna High AC pressure at times???
My wife's 04 Toyota Sienna's AC system seems to work off and on. Some days it's fine, other days it blows hot.
I put a cheap gauge on it and when it's not blowing cold the needle on the gauge goes all the way around and pegs the needle at the beginning. When it's blowing cold the pressure is normal? My guess would be a sensor or switch, but google searches haven't come up with anything. The electric fan is working when the AC is on. Thanks! |

get a real set of gauges or take to a shop that can read
50# makes alot of difference in diagnostics. Is the compressor still turning when pressure is high and blowing hot?

If a cheap gauge means a single gauge like on a refill hose,,, then it was connected to the low pressure side and if the compressor is not running then yeah, static pressure with under hood ambient temps will probably have high enough pressure to peg that particular gauge. Then, when the compressor is running the low side pulls the pressure down to ‘normal’ which is actually a good sign meaning the system still operates normally, at least when its on. So if that’s the case I’d look for why its not turning on when commanded, like a relay.

David - quicksilver's on the money . . .
The next time it acts up observe the A/C lamp on the control panel, if it's flashing then this Toyota Service Bulletin applies. EXTREMELY common problem. Simple repair, hope this helps!

Thank you quicksilver and Lloyd.
I swapped the m/clt relay with the one next to it and went for a quick trip, worked great. Was that the problem, I hope so because the compressor is a lot more expensive. I swapped them back and will pick one up tomorrow. Thanks for the TSB Lloyd. |

Follow up: After installing the new relay the AC has worked non stop.
Thank you to Quicksilver and Lloyd for making this an easy fix. And thanks to Cammer for helping out as well. |
